I'm thinking of bying DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM

I have read the lens-review about this lens. And I really want it. But I thought I should ask if there is any other lens I rather should choose. I want a good tele but it is not cheap in Norway, actually I have just found one dealer in Norway with this lens. And the pris is not what I want to bye it for.

I have searched the internet and found some dealers in the U.S but I'm not a fan of buying from dealers I don't know. Any recommendations?

You could also look at the Sigma/Tamron lineup for your telephoto. Many of their products are surprisingly good. The Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 will come out in Pentax mount next month (I think); if you're into zoom lenses.

Well, I was thinking of a prime. But I don't know. Isn't the sigma 300mm higher in prise?

I've had a play and to be honest It's not that much different from the 200mm except the stop slower and it has a tripod mount and is quite a bit heavier but you can still manage handheld shots etc. Whats your plan for it?

My photos here: http://dopeytree.com/client-area/pentax

half way down on page 4-6 pages 7-9 are shot with the 200mm in london...I foudn the 300mm to heavy and just too far a focal length to be usefull but it all depends on what your going to be using the lens for I guess.

Well, I don’t know actually:P
I just want a prime tele and I’m interested in sport-photography and thought 300mm might be a good lens for this?

I guess so but I've never done any sport stuff so I wouldn't know but I can imagine it could be a bit annoying with a tripod/monopod i think i'd go for the 200mm f2.8 but meh its your choice. See what others say

just had a thought, are you sure you want a prime for sport you'll probably get more decent photos with a zoom otherwise you'll have to move all over the place to follow the action. What sport are we talking about anyway?

Yes, I think your right. Well, I'm still a student and there is no main sport!
But I'll take a closer look at the sigma 100-300 I don't know what you people think, but 1771 dollars is alot of money.:/ That is the only pris in Norway

if you want to shoot sport - but you don't know which sport - don't get a 300mm prime. You will be very disappointed. Get the 200mm F/2.8. It is a better lens, it will be MUCH easier to shoot and it will be useful in more situations for more sports.

The DA*200mm belongs in all discussions about "what is the greatest lens Pentax has ever produced"

If you don't need autofocus, the A* 300mm is more compact and much cheaper (when they are available). I'm actually considering offering mine for sale (I very rarely use tele's).

Maybe you should go to the store that has the DA*300 and talk to the Pentax salesman. Maybe he will give you a better price. It doesn't hurt to try at least.
