Kelly requested shots from the 50/1.4 at 1.4 to investigate the background
character. Sorry to be so tardy.

First shot is a wall covered with vines and the bright strip on the left edge is
the end of the wall. You can see that the OOF begins rather quickly.

The second and third shots are the same wall with the background up close.
Apologies for the subjects being out of focus.

No worries about any perceived delay Gary, just thanks for posting! It seems we are a lonely group of several here only. I'm always happy to see more samples, my brain stores them all up and fuels my LBA meter, lol.

It seems to me that oof rendering is one of the most unique characteristics between lenses (even similarly spec'd lenses), so its certainly a welcome thing to increase the sample base floating around.

Took the 85 for a spin out a Reader Rock gardens here in Calgary. Most of the blooms are gone, but some nice fall colors accent what was left. I'm getting the hang of the fast, short tele vibe, but its not a natural thing for me just yet. My personal keep rate is improving though, so my praise for the lens can grow a little more too.

If I was able to redesign this lens (by magic of course) I'd have it focus more closely, even just to the 1:5.8 or so of the Nokton - bokeh takes weird turns in tight. I'd still say its a little less versatile than other lenses, esp on APS-C. There were times I felt that at its minimum distance, I'd like to be able to capture more, rather than stand back and add too much depth of field. I can honestly see why Pentax hasn't rebuilt a fast 85 yet. Meanwhile, it does do some unique things. Pardon the different pictures sizes - I'm transitioning some stuff (but not all of it) over to Zenfolio at the moment.

Zeiss Planar T*85, all at 1.4 (I think, might have stopped down to 1.7 or 2 for exposure)











Id say its bokeh is a lot less sensitive to light than any other lens I've used. It tends to render highlights in a muted fashion, the overall effect seems mottled - like oil paint to me, vs the Noktons more light sensitive water-color and delicate highlights.

There is a lot of nice stuff on this thread, and although the forum stops emailing me on stuff i haven't looked at in a while, it does make sure i get my dose of Zeiss LBA thread....

That last series is really nice Kelly. The bokeh is certainly different to that produced by the Nokton but pleasant nonetheless.
I like how it handles the foreground OOF, #1 and #4 are good examples of that.
I'm excited about the separation this lens produces, a couple of those shots almost have the appearance of two different shots merged, a foreground and a background.
Looks like I am going to be lens hunting again.

Here are three pics from a K20 and ZK 100/2. I foolishly put that lens

Oh... I gave it thought Gary! I just didn't have the ability to do anything about it hehe. Glad to see its not disappointing you to have it still around! Bokeh looks quite smooth. I've noted that between it and the VL125 shots I've seen/produced they look fairly similar. Do you find either has a definitive character trait to set it apart from the other (aside from the extra 25mm, heh) ?

To be truthful, I have a hard time telling them apart. To me, I think the 100/2 has a little more of the 3D effect and that the 100/2 is a little sharper at or near infinity. I used to think that the colors of the lanthar were slightly more subdued but now I think it's the light that make the difference.
They are both wonderful lenses and support my passion for mid tele length
for landscape work.

Below is an example of the 100/2 at infinity. My technique for posting is bad and the sharpness is diminished.
