It look's in perfect shape with all accessories. The price is breathtaking.

(I have nothing to do with the listing. I regularly browse M42 lenses for sale.)

You could get this and the night vision kit that’s bouncing around there and have something really unusual...

But definitely high on the cool meter...

Oh my... One for serious collectors, clearly. Given the condition, I guess it's worth that kind of money to them.

As @monochrome says, just seeing the photos is a thrill...

Wonder how that would work for astrophotography in the non-visible spectrum.

Wow - would love to have that.

Sadly, as a collectors piece and at that sort of price, I can't see it getting any serious use.

It's actually a bit of a shame that it's in such pristine condition. Appears it was never used and at that price will likely never be used.

As an aside, can anyone explain a quartz/fluorite lens element? I know what quartz is, (SiO2), and I know what fluorite is, (CaF2),
but I have no idea about quartz/fluorite.

Are some of the elements fluorite and others quartz?
Is it an admixture of quartz and fluorite?, (unlikely, as that would produce a very uneven and unpredictable light path as light
refracted between areas of fluorite and quartz).
Or perhaps each element is a sandwich of fluorite and quartz?, (that would make sense).
Or maybe it's a calcium silicate fluoride?, (not actually quartz or fluorite).
Or a calcium & fluorine bearing amorphous silica glass?, (also not quartz or fluorite).

The mineralogist in me really wants to know.

Some of the lens elements are quartz and some are fluorite. People who are into UV and IR photography get upset when a non-serious user buys these. It works for any kind of photography in the specified bandwidth, but many astrophotos are taken in frequencies that are out of this range.

It's been relisted, with a HIGHER starting bid. So what could have been a $3,900 purchase is now a $5,200 purchase. I don't anticipate this selling any time soon.
