The number of aperture blades doesn't affect wide open bokeh...

This seems to be quite a common misconception that's frequently found in lens reviews. The reviewer gives a sample image of the lens, clearly taken at a wide open aperture, then attributes the beautiful bokeh to the '11 rounded blade aperture'.

Hopefully I'm not the only one who has noticed it!

Hmm, with some of my lenses, even wide open, the aperture blades do not fully retract so that might be the contributing factor here. Even at the widest aperture, the form and number of blades may still influence bokeh shape.

Yes and it often makes it a hard decision when shooting whether to stop down that one click to boost the IQ because that is often the point when the iris is at its most jagged.
