Interesting that most such "tests" utilize widest aperture so folks have bristled at the F8 measures. As a primarily landscape guy, I'd love to see the tests done at f16 and f22. In my life wide open apertures don't exist so corner sharpeness at f1.8 will never be a concern.

Does anybody else use lenses stopped down?

Yes, often, but mainly wideangles and normals. On the telephoto range I usualy go as wide apperture as I can because speed (for sharper photos due to shake reduction effects of high speeds) is always a concern.
But if I can, since I pay my money, a want all my lenses as sharp as I can afford, as wide as possible. Compromises are all the time in line
