super takumar 35mm f/3.5 (iii) vs pentax 40mm f/2.8 limited

hi guys, currently, for normal length, I use super takumar 35mm f/3.5 (the version with distance scale window) on a full frame sony. I'm able to get a 40mm LTD cheap ($120). Wondering if I should take the plunge. Does anyone have experience with both ?

your thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take the plunge. Great lens.

Ps. At that price you will probably miss out if you delay. That is my #1 thought.

If you can afford it, do it! Now.

With lenses there really is very little to lose. You could probably sell it at a profit if you don't like it.

Of the 2 I like how the Tak 35 renders colors better than the 40. The 40 is an outstanding lens. Does your adapter allow setting aperture ?

thanks thazooo. I do find the takumar output to be incredibly colourful. Just so much nicer than konica hexanons. I guess I will have to play around with the takumar more before deciding.

Yeah I understand that I have to order an adapter with aperture control

$120 and you get a very small lens with AF.
I'd get the 40ltd.

I prefer the look from the 40 (I have the XS), very contrasty and strong drawing style.
That 40mm FL combined with f2.8 does give a better separation efffect too.

I have the SMC 40mm f2.8 Ltd and the SMC K35 f3.5.

The 40 Ltd must be the best super pancake lens ever made. I've used it on a K30 and a pocket tripod up on mountain summits for astrophotography where it is great even wide open. Closed down it 'draws' laser sharp lines as it is super contrasty.

Great for trips and travel if you must keep the weight and size down. Also makes a DSLR look less conspicuous turning it into a big toy camera (like the K01 with the DA 40 XS and my K30 with the 40Ltd sn't too far off)) which can be useful for street photography and photographing 'strangers'... Much less likely to get attacked 😂

For that price used, it is a no brainer 😉

Some samples from the 40XS.

Its a rather nice all rounder lens on apsc.
Rather fast, super small, sharp at f2.8, rich colors and contrasty.

Even works somewhat as a FF lens.

At f8-f11, its a decent FF landscape lens as well.

I left a large sized file in the flickr too for those who want to check IQ on FF.

Some samples with the Takumar 35/3.5.

I'm using it on FF and not on a Pentax camera, so YMMV.

There is certainly a difference between how it draws and renders an image compared to the 40XS.
More subtle in the contrast and more natural colors imo
