A good lens for studio work??

I currently use the 16-50. I have been wanting to make a new lens purchase but have been very undecisive with a decision. I will be buying some studio equipment for portrait and product shots and what not. So I guess my question is should I focus more money on the studio equipment or a new lens?? Is the 16-50 a lens that can be used in the studio?? Thanks, Michael

Wouldn't primes and sneaker zoom be better suited to studio work? I dink around a bit - slowly going through Strobist Lighting102 - but my neophyte thinking is were I to get serious with it I'd be shopping for a 35/50/85/135/200 suite of primes.

77mm limited will fill the other end of your range for studio work whilst still using the 16-50

check the threads on it... its one heck of a portrait lens.

I have found that the DA* 50-135/2.8 works quite well for portraits. It would be a bit pricey, perhaps for that sole use, but then it works well at the soccer field, also.

I agree on that one Albert.

I also have the 50-135, but so far I prefer the 77mm for indoor portraits, it also seems to produce better when shooting with flash and it never ceases to amaze me.

That just my opinion and I do reckon the combo of the 16-50 and 50-135 is a great one... the 50-135 is my favourite zoom as I shoot a lot of Arena Athletics.

The Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 has proven to be my most used lens in the studio. Prior to getting it I was constantly switching between my 16-45 and my 50-200. Looking at the EXIFs, most shots were done between 35-80mm so the Tammy covers the range almost prfectly. My last 2 shoots were done almost totally with the Tammy.

Black Valentine shoot or Echoe Nudes (ADULTS ONLY PLEASE).

Pentax 70mm Limited:
REVI
Tamron 28-75 f/2,8:
REVI
Now I have changed the 70mm by 77mm, tomorrow I would put a study session with 77mm.
