Around this focal length, the tamron 28-75 f2.8 is cheap and gets great reviews!

Hmmm, have you thought of buying it online and having it shipped to you? I know there are some folks from Australia on this forum that buy a lot of items from B&H and have it shipped to them, and they save quite a bit over buying locally.

Did you give any consideration to the Sigma 17-70?. Is in that range but a bit wider, and includes macro facility. A brilliant lens for leaving on the camera most of the time.
Comes in around about the price range you mention, may have to do a bit of scouting about on the price..

I have the Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 and the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 both give excellent results. I agree with the recomendation of the the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 even though it is a little more money it's a great lens.

Thats correct and I can vouch for it.

I purchased one lens in Australia... the store had to get it in. It took more than a week.

Since then I have brought from B&H and can vouch for their service... never been more than 4 working days from order to front door.

Though the aussie dollar has taken a dive over the last 2 weeks its still worth my while price wise if I were to buy

I dont know why the K20 and the Sammy gx20 are just as cheap here as in the states but when it comes to lenses... phew so expensive.

The Sigma 24-60/F2.8 EX DG is also a good alternative, although not as wide or as long as the 17-70, it is not as heavy and it is constant aperture. And it is a bit less expensive.

The indications are it is being discontinued (though no confirmation) by Sigma in favor of the other lenses in its range. So it is being cleared by many stores. It is listed in the USD240 range. I got mine from Henry's Photo-Toronto for USD238.

Check out the reviews. They report very good IQ. Of course there has been some feedback about BF-FF issues but all the other lenses mentioned have the same thing. My copy is ok based on pix taken to date.
