New and old: DFA 15-30 and FA 20-35

While I know they are quite different in many ways, the DFA 15-30 does replace the FA 20-35 as the Pentax FF ultra-wide zoom. I've had and liked the 20-35 for some time now on the K-1 but the desire to do some milky way shots spurred me to make a change. I was looking hard at the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 which is highly respected but decided I was better off replacing my wide landscape lens rather than buying a single purpose prime.

So the 20-35 is for sale and the 15-30 gets a spot in my (now much heavier) bag. The 20-35 is offered for sale here

I knew the 15-30 was bigger. But I was not really prepared, the 20-35 can live inside it with lots of room

The 15-30 has certainly eaten all the pies.

If I were you I would hang on to your 20-35. When I got the 24-70 to pair with my new K1 i sold my old FA 24-90. The 24-70 is a better lens in my opinion, but not by much, and there are times I would like to "walkaround" with that kind of focal length attached. The FA lens is a lighter alternative and I regret selling it.

I have the D FA 15-30 and considered pursuing the 20-35 as well for it's minimal size and weight. However, as a zoom-shooter 20-35 is fairly narrow for me. I have the 24-70 which is a substantial size lens, but nothing like the 15-30 so it's fairly easy to carry. I added the FA 20 so that I could go a little wider without taking the 15-30 at times. If I really want to travel light I can take my D FA 28-105 with, or without, the FA 20 to go wider. But the 15-30 is definitely the best ultra-wide option for me. The FOV difference between 15 and 20 mm is pretty big. For landscapes the 15-30 and the 24-70 make a great pair if you can handle the size / weight.

The 20-35 rarely turns up for sale. I've been considering it often to serve as a replacement for my DA21 on full frame (it seems the 20-35 can do starbursts pretty well) but have never found one on offer when I got the urge.
