This bird was about 4 feet in front of me and the lens (sigma 100-300 F/4 with 1.4TC ) was still able to lock focus on it...This would be 420mm locked in at 4 feet or so.

OK, Some bonus shots with this lens.

I also have the DA*200 and DA*300 and I like the sigma far better....

Interesting comment, Jay. While I too have the DA*s, I decided to try the 100-300 and ordered it today (delivery tomorrow, courtesy Amazon). If my results are as good as yours I expect my conclusion will be the same also..........

No, I already have the TC (bought from a forum member a few weeks ago). It is not 'DG' though and I am hoping that will not make any functional or IQ difference.....if anyone knows
otherwise, please let me know?

John, what tends to happen with the non DG TC is that it looses communication with that lens and auto focus becomes erratic. You will get an ''f'' at the aperture screen. It also tends to back focus...I have not experienced this myself as I have the DG version, but have read this quite a bit on some other forums...Just what I have heard,

Well, I'll find out soon enough......thanks, Jay. I'll let you know...........

I just spoke to a Japanese (I think) C.S. tech at Sigma and he said it 'should work'. We'll see..............

One other thing. a little slop between the TC and body is ok, but ''ANY'' slop between the TC and lens will create a problem. This has been verified by many with this combo.

Got the lens; it arrived just as my ex did, so I wasn't able to get it out till late (yap, yap, yap) and shot just a few pix to confirm function. Works fine, images very crisp, AF fast and positive on the K20. To my rellief, the TC seems to work even tho it is not DG. Jay, there is a little 'slop'
twixt TC and lens but apparently not enough to cause problems. I'll get it out tomorrow for more extensive testing. Quite a beast overall............should be fun!

Great news!!!!
I am anxious to hear how your findings compare with mine in relation to the DA*s...

Serious Glass...........

.....is how I'll describe this lens. Below are some pix I took from a bluff overlooking the Ohio River this am. All three were at greater than 1/2 mile. The first two are cropped, the third not; no other editing. The first is with the 1.4 TC, the other two only the lens, all w/K20. As to DA*s in comparison my amateur view is that the 100-300 is as good as the 300 prime and almst as good as the 200. One hell of a lens!

John, I knew you would be impressed...It simply does not behave like a zoom. The ''only'' reason I have not sold my DA*200 AND *300 is for the weather sealing...That is the only reason and if not for a trip I am taking next month to the rain forest, I would have sold them...Infact, I may sell them when I get back.
