New kit lens for Pentax K100D

I have been thinking about replacing my kit lens with a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8, but couldn't really afford the 299 price tag. As OneStop Digital now stock the Pentax version at 216 I am quite tempted. I have a Tamron 18-250mm as a walk about (not so good in poor light and catching speeding kids in the garden).

So Am I making the right choice or should I be looking at something else like the Pentax DA 16-45mm.

Cheers

Pete

I assuming that your budget is around $400USD, right?
Your right choice depends on whether or not constant aperture is important to you. If it is important, then another lens to consider is is the Tamron 28-75/2.8. It's not as wide as the 17-50, but if you don't need extra wide for shooting pics of your kids running around, then it would most certainly fit into your budget, especially if you can pick up a used one in the Marketplace.

If you want something faster than the 18-250, but constant aperture isn't a big deal to you, then the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 is also a good option and can also be had a good bit less expensively than the Pentax 17-70.

Along those same lines, I'd recommend the Sigma EX DG 24-60mm/2.8. Much lighter on the wallet ($200USD at Amazon). If you need to do wider, I agree with Heather.....the Sigma 17-70 is the perfect upgrade from the kit lens. It has a little more speed and a little more reach on the long end, two areas where the kit lens is lacking.

I just ordered the Tamron 17-50/2.8 for 399.00. Everyone told me in here that it's the best wide angle lens over 17mm.

Thanks for the posts.

Just to let you know I am fairly new to this photography game. Assuming either of the Tamron 17-50 or the Sigma 17-70 would produce better results than my Tamron 18-250 and as I do take a few landscapes then I should discount the Tamron 28-75/2.8 and Sigma EX DG 24-60mm/2.8.

So which one the Tamron 17-50 (quicker & sharper (I think)) or the Sigma 17-70 (longer reach & Macro).

The Pentax version? You mean the DA* 16-50? That's got to be some mistake, or a scam. No way is that lens being sold for that price by any legitimate dealer. Not even used.

Or maybe you mean the 16-45. That is of course not an f/2.8.

I have recently started using the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and am VERY satisfied with it. A major improvement over the kit lens.

It's very sharp for a zoom and the constant f2.8 makes it a great low light lens. To me it was worth every penny I paid for it, definetly worth saving your money a bit longer if cost is an issue.

Another vote for the 17-50 here. I absolutely love mine. It's sharp, it's fast and has great color. While it's not a macro it does darn good close up at 50mm - FOV approx. 4"/100mm at minimum focus distance.

Looks like the Tamron 17-50 is favourite.
