Some parrots with the KP and DA 55-300 PLM

Little Corella

Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoo (seeing fewer of these in recent years)

Galah

Rainbow Lorikeets

Pretty Boy Floyd, an Australian King Parrot, who comes and demands seed from time to time. The price is that he poses for a photo.

I have previously posted some of Floyd in his immature plumage from last summer in post #523

Many thanks Rod. Pity I didn't have a recent Crimson Rosella as well.

Just got my hands on the KP and threw the PLM+1.4xTC WR on it, just for fun. This is an extreme crop of some sea lions over a mile away. I shot this handheld and atmospheric conditions weren't (are never) ideal over the bay, but a tripod might have helped.

Next time you’re out could you shoot the same scene, with and without the TC and post the results cropped to match, for comparison purposes?TIA.

x-post.

Lets change to a more unusual subject. Was waiting for my wife in front of a store. Had the KP with me, DA55-300PLM attached. Suddenly thought I could practice shots at 300mm, handheld. Some meters away two cranes. Hm - how much detail can I get with this lens from the crane arms and hinges? Needs some images to check. Let's have a look ...

A 100% crop from the last image ...

Nice photo, Beautiful bird, I've never saw one even though I've lived in its range my entire life. It does look similar to a Pine Warbler, which only recently saw for the first time.

Good shot of that "rare" rabbit. I was just thinking about the devastating fires last year. How is nature and wildlife recovering in those areas? I'm sure rabbits will do well wherever, but so many animals are habitat dependent.

Yes, the determining factor for me was the yellow ring around the eye.

New KP with the 55-300 PLM

Just got a KP with battery grip and the free flash from Adorama. It arrived on Thursday and here is link to my first photos. Taken with the 55-300 PLM.

Pentax KP Bird First Photos January 2021 | Flickr

I know these are not the most exotic birds, but we see them a lot in New England in the winter.

It will take some getting used to the KP's new controls and figuring out how to customize it. First thing I did was set Fx1 to depth of field preview. It seems to focus better than my K3 especially with the 55-300 PLM.

My daughter called me a few days ago to say that she had seen a pair of eagles known to have a nest near her house. I ran over there with my K-3II and 55-300mm PLM to see if I could catch them. Unfortunately, no. However, I did catch another unidentified raptor in the distance, which turned out to be a red-tailed hawk, shown in a picture taken handheld with the lens at 300mm:

As you can see, the bird is hardly visible. Cropping the original gave me this:

As far as I'm concerned, this shows exactly why this lens has the well-deserved reputation it has!

Thanks Tom. The thing with the fires is that they burnt very extensively, which has meant that there were not the number or extent of unburnt gullies and the like from which species could start to recolonise the burnt areas. And for species whose habitat was already fragmented, whole colonies could be wiped out. For example, one koala researcher monitored a number of study sites that were burnt and found that koalas had been completely wiped out in most of them. As for feral animals, yes they seem to move in quickly. Not so much the rabbits but the foxes and cats. It's a pretty grim story I'm afraid.
