Taken with the DA 55-300 PLM, some not at 300mm, some not even close....

This was my first time out shooting with the K-3 and K-1 since shoulder surgery. The DA 55-300 is about as much weight as I can handle at the moment, 4 months gone, 4 more to go.

Backed out to show some context....

5 species, in order of capture.

No chance to get this close to the birds in this part of the world. Too skittish. Need a 3000mm lens....

Same subject as the images a few pages ago. Same place but a month later. Same type of light. No increase in saturation. Only tweak is a slight opening of shadows and sharpening.

The sun is finally back this far north of the polar circle after having been away for over a month. This is from Sunday. People are out watching the sun.

The Cameron Rd. parking lot is on every photographer's route. Everyone feeds the birds, they swamp you as soon as you arrive on days when no one has been there. It's kind of a community effort of Algonquin Park photographers. Everyone helps keep the birds tame. The most habituated birds get the best treats. It appeared I was the only one to go yesterday, they ate a kilo of mixed seed in about 45 minutes. Several landed on my hat.

The Spruce Boardwalk trail is similar. So on 15 km stretch, you have Cameron Road, the Spruce boardwalk trail and the VIsitor's Centre which has an observation deck and huge bird feeders at the back. Going there with a long lens practically guarantees you some worthwhile images. A nature photographer's paradise. Throw in the chance (but definitely no guarantee) of seeing Moose, Foxes, Pine Martins and even after 10 years here, every trip is an adventure.

It is so easy to get out the door, when you know you are going to get some images.

K-3 DA 55-300 PLM
ƒ8, ISO 100

From where I was sitting I could see this bird flying back and forth from a nest hole, storing food, which enabled me to get multiple shots of a behaviour being repeated over and over again. Which made it possible for me to document the whole behaviour.

How to get food it you are a nuthatch?

Find a branch from where you can evaluate the landscape.

Look up.

Check the nearby bushes for competitors.

Look down... oh boy goodies.

OK, going for the goodies...

Pay dirt.

K-3 and DA 55-300 PLM

A pine Martin raiding the bird seed at the Cameron Rd parking lot.

A raven came to see me. I called him, he came in for a fly over then came down for a look. Maybe he's my guy from at least 3 other photoshoots.. It's so hard to tell with Ravens.

If you feed chickadees food from the top of your hat....

They may take some string from your hat.

There's a little bit of snow on the picnic tables.

Thanks Rod, when you don't get out much you have to make the most of it when you do.
