On a KP. Cropped ~50%, still plenty of detail.

Took it down the beach today with the K-70 and not sure whether I’m doing something wrong or what (probably me to be fair) but I’m missing focus a fair amount, especially with moving objects, regardless of focus type, focus area etc eg afc vs afs, spot vs 11 vs 5 “areas”.

Shutter speeds were reasonable, around 1/640s and aperture around F/8-/10. Not sure what to do as it’s nice to have the length but annoying to have missed focus and therefore missed the shots. Don’t think it’s down to fine tuning and sometimes it absolutely nails it, especially for still objects.

I did check for focus confirmation before taking some of the shots but still. At a loss with this one. Conditions favourable, sunny and seemingly enough contest between subject and background. Stumped!

Pretty damn'd good - except that the shutter speed is "too high" because the prop blades are too "sharp" - generally you need to use around 160th to 320th (max!) to get the "right blur" levels to make shots look "right" for a prop plane.

Thanks

It was my first attempt to photograph planes moving

it depends on the amount of blur you want I guess

my main goal was some blur, I didn't want it to look like the plane wasn't moving

I was glad to get the sharpness of the plane, it was a long way away and I didn't have the big lens 150-450mm with me

as I was told that none of the planes would be taking off and it was back in the parked vehicle.

A grabshot from a moving tourist boat on the River Thames at Runnymede (where the Magna Carta was signed by King John) a couple of weeks ago with the K70 at 1/250th at F7.1 on TAVR and the PLM at the "full stretch" of 300mm. The only thing I can possibly fault from the camera and lens perspective is that the AF point is probably the tail feathers of the heron rather than its eyes - but then again I only had a couple of seconds to "point and shoot" at the bird, and this was the 2nd of only 2 shots for which I had time.

The final version is very heavily cropped, and so, as I am never certain how to quote "cropping factors", I'm also including the full uncropped shot so you can see how much cropping was done - also some levels changes in FastStone Image viewer to bring out the "greeness" of the reeds.
