Was the best way I could describe what happens, looks sort of like a combination of CA and camera shake but happens on a tripod with body stabilization off.Luckily there's a park nearby so I shot off a quick example.

I think the lens is defective (especially if you are getting the sorts of results in the first image at different settings, handheld and tripod-mounted). But I think it would be prudent to try it on another body, and try another lens on the K-70, to be sure that there isn't something else wrong. If your friend with the K-5 gets the same results (the K-5 will need to have the aperture set to the lens's maximum aperture, because it won't stop down) it will also put you in a better position if you end up in an argument with the seller or with Ricoh.

Thank you everyone for the help, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy, but with these amazing photos showing wide open capabilities I'll definitely continue troubleshooting on another body, etc. Before deeming it defective. Have plenty of time since the Canadian Ricoh Pentax service centre is still closed due to covid.

Since my primary sources or locations of photographic subject matter are shut down, my dog Bandit has become my main subject. I recently tried similar shots with my DA*300 and found it focuses too slow for the coming back fetch run.

So were these taken on a tripod, or hand held?

If on the tripod, SR off with remote shutter or MLU/2S delay? How heavy is your tripod?

If hand held, was SR on? Your shutter speeds are low for a long lens but SR should take care of it.

To me it does look like a faulty lens; I shoot it mostly at f8 and I generally get great sharp and clear photos.

Ya happens on a tripod with SR off and remote triggered, as well as handheld with both SR on or off, at all focal lengths and various shutter speeds (tested over 1/1000th for any handheld) with both Live view and viewfinder. The only constant is it doesn't seem to get clear and sharp until f10 or higher.

So I'm going to test it on another camera and will have access to the 18-135 and various other lenses to test on mine. Just getting over there having to work and with the whole covid thing going on is making it more difficult.

That seems to be an understatement
FWIW, I'm no expert, but am comfortable confirming that it IS a bird. Probably a Northern Mockingbird. Nice shot.

One of the things I like most about the 55-300 is that it is easy to bring along, so it comes along more often than a bigger rig would.

I was feeling guilty yesterday because I left it home and shot with the 200 2.8 and 1.7x TC. But it was cloudy... so if you're looking at what it own't do. It won't do this.

Hand held 340mm, ƒ4.5 1/200s most of the images were ruined by shallow DOF or motion blur. Shootng 6.3 instead of 4.5 would have been pretty near impossible.
