Last update, if anyone still interested :)

So, the 20-40 is returned to the seller, and I purchased a an HD 35 instead.

Although I really miss the quiet focussing on the 20 40, the image quality of the 35 is what I really am looking for (and I can really feel how much my compositioning improved already by using primes, wanna keep that going). I tried the 35 2,4 for a day, and the fov was fine for me (but the screwdrive noise, oh my.....).

Maybe there will be an update to the 20 40 some day, which will improve image IQ to my liking, and I cannot rid the feeling that I was just that lucky to have received a complete dud for a lens. Unfortunately, it is not like with Canon that I could just go to a neighboring camera store and test my assumption with another lens.

Anyways, thanks again to all of your for your reponses, hav a good weekend!

I think it's much more likely that you received a poor copy, than such a popular lens being redesigned. Hopefully you will enjoy the 35!

funny thing - I bought the HD DA 35 Limited instead of the 20-40 zoom (I realize that you've returned the zoom and bought the prime instead) and it solved my curiosity for the 20-40....

You could have made the 20-40 spread Pixie dust once you got to know it Dave. you have proved that with what we are seeing from your DA 35 Macro. (And your SMC A 200.)
