Unfortunately, no. When I was photographing the spider I kept looking at the preview and the histogram and twiddling the compensation (and other settings) until I got the illumination right, but it must be a coincidence that -2.0 gave me the right level. I've just taken shots in a more controlled test (+1, 0, -1, -2, camera on a tripod) and they all look the same, so the flash must be firing full power on all of them
Oh well, it looks like I will have to resort to putting tissue paper over the flash to reduce it.

LOL, and from a search on the internet I see that some people have had allergic reactions from being bitten by one of those. This one didn't seem too worried by me.
