Originally posted by LensBeginner For me, there's a sense of primitive enjoyment whenever I use a tele... it's like when you hand a binocular to a child... seeing far-away objects as if you were actually closer, the feeling of being able to move at will in space...
I started experimenting with the only cheap TC I own for this very reason.
I miss very much the wetlands with bird watching areas, close the the place were I was born.
It's a real pity, nothing like that where I live now.
There is no much use for long teles here. Last time I brought the Sigma HSM OS 120-400mm: almost never used it... but it got infected by fungi!
Next time I will bring a much lighter AF zoom, the Tokina AT-X Pro 80-400mm
Originally posted by normhead After seeing how many people in the lens ownership polls who never shoot over 100mm, I wonder how much market there would be for it. But I'm sure they could make a new one for a lot less than the one in the market place is going for. But would it ever be worth their while?
When I was 17 years old, a friend had invited me over to his house while his parents were gone ( which was against house rules). My buddy says "Come see this." With a sense of awe and wonder he went into his father's closet, pulled out a long black tube ( from the back of the closet behind his father's clothes) from which he withdrew a very long Pentax SMC 600mm lens. I've been fascinated with long glass ever since. Reading the forum, I've come to understand, that's not a common attribute.
Not me!!
I have been fascinated by huge cannons (not Canons!) since I was a teenager.
Always loved huge, bulky lenses.
Can't say why, I find them irresistibly attractive
Over time I amassed a huge number.
The one I love the most is not so huge, though it's as beautiful as a Pentax lens could ever be.
I could never afford it these days, fortunately I bought it when I could.
It's the Pentax-A Star f/2.8 300mm.
I purchased it in like new condition, in its beautiful case, with a 2x "L" teleconverter and a super expensive (and huge!) Helioplan circular polarizer.
Later on, I added the 1.4x-L converter and the AF 1.7x converter.
Never tried it on the K-1. I bet it would outresolve the sensor, even with the 1.4x.
I have a few other memorable chimneys, like the SMC Pentax 4.5/500mm (I had to strip out an ugly camouflage) and the Pentacon 5.6/500mm converted to 6x7 mount.
Two other wonderful lenses are the Tamron SP (Adaptall-2) 200-500mm (third and last version with the same focal), and the Enna Tele-Ennalyt 4.5/400mm (I have a very rare version with multi-coating).
Other valuable long lenses are the various russian catadioptric. The Matsukov 1100mm is another huge beast!
I'm trying to assemble some pieces of Ikea furniture to have my lens collection on display. Well, these huge lenses will never find place on a cupboard
I guess they will be left out of sight, together with all the Novoflex follow-focus stuff...
