May well be the coatings indeed. I've the Super-Tak (later, but non-SMC) version of the 35/3.5 and find its rendering rather spectacular for its age/size etc. Not incredibly sharp per se, but with a dimensional pop that I enjoy. Can't comment on the earlier Auto-Tak version though.
Some of the non-smc (35mm f/3.5) are in fact smc. Pentax did not identify them initially as smc.

And for the OP, I also suggest a hood. I use the square metal 28 and 35 mm takumar hoods (49 mm filter size) on a lot of my 24 to 35 mm FL lenses on cropped sensor.

Yes, they've never done coating tweaks and changes with much fanfare.

Though peeking at them all now, the 35 does have that flatter, more amber-leaning sheen of the other Taks as opposed to the more purpleish rainbow of my Ks.
But who knows.

Got the ring, and added a UV / skylight filter. The depth of the ring and filter added some protection. I think a full hood would be even better. That said, I am seeing some improvement. Plus, I am super impressed with the clarity of this lens. Here's a full image (with some post-processing) and a crop down to "several leaf" level.

I have the SMC copy and Im satisfied with mine completely.
I use the hood all the time , and if I never had a new 35mm lens to play with I sure wouldn't cry over it.
Mine is that good !
I tried to bang out a few quickies tonight , but ran out of light.
Maybe tomorrow I will post one or two.
