SMC DA 18 - 135 Lens- Operaing Issues?

I purchased a used DA 18-135 lens, but can't get it to change focal length. Is there a lock mechanism? There is an outer knerled part of then barrel (that in any other lens I've used) that would be the zoom, but it doesn't turn. There is a narrower inner part that turns freely, but doesn't seem to change any function. Did I get abad deal?

Hi, There is no locking mechanism on this lens, and the inner narrow width band will visually change the focus in the OVF. It sounds like the lens is broken. Can you return it?

Yep, return it...
As for the rings, one is the zoom, the smaller one the focus.

Thanks for the quick replies. I tried one last time before returning it ( I have 30 days) and managed to get the barrel moving and the zoom to work - perhaps just jammed a little. I'll play with it for a few days more before deciding whether to return it or not. Focus motor seems to work fine and so does the focusing ring. Thanks again.

"Just jammed a little" is not good... a modern digital AF lens shouldn't jam under normal conditions.
It could be the outcome of a fall or a bump, all things who could have had an effect on lens alignment as well.
I'd return it, my 0.02c

I've had this lens for a number of years, bought new, and much-used. It is very smooth to operate, both for zoom and for focus. It has exceptionally fast, quiet, and accurate AF. A very versatile lens with fine image quality. I wouldn't take a chance. It should function perfectly every time.

As others have said. This lens’s zoom should have moved smoothly. You should not of had to use a lot of force to get it to move. Something is not right. Return it while you can.
