Continuing the "one lens" series which lens have you always wanted to get, but you ended up never buying? For whatever reason - you have another lens that you are happy with in that focal length, or because it got too pricey or hard to find, or simply because you never got around to go looking for it?

I think for me it's the Samyang/Rokinon 16mm f2... I have always wanted it to complete an "all primes" kind of kit (my widest prime now being 24mm, which isn't really that wide on APS-C). After the DA 16-45 came by, and f4 ended up being enough at 16mm for most of my uses, I just never got around to saving up for one, even though they're not that expensive in the used market, though they seem to have become a bit hard to find. I still want one, but I have no idea when I'll finally get it... or if I'll ever get it.

I also wanted a 17-50 f/2.8 lens (or 16-50) but that doesn't count, I think, because I no longer feel the urge to buy one, also due to the DA 16-45.
FA 77

I have the FA31 love it. Bought the DA70 to save a few $$ enjoy it, but always wonder...

I currently have a mint SMC A15/3.5 and I got it cheap. I remember because I already had the takumar 15/3.5 which was expensive like $900 when I bought that in
the eighties, but I later sold it to a collector for $1700 around 2010 so it all worked out fine.

Why would you want a "K" lens instead of the comparable "M" lens, even if they went for the same price?
because the SMCK 28/3.5 is a spectacular lens, one of pentax best ever, and better performer than the m version. and its worth todays price imho.

How many lifetimes in a never? My life isn't over yet and there are still many lens I have yet to pull the trigger on,
despite varying degrees of interest. Will that translate to never? Impossible to say, but here are a few candidates:

DA 20-40. The zoom that almost isn't. If I ever loose my aversion to all the negatives of a zoom, this will likely
be my entry point. But it hasn't happened yet.

50/1.2, (several variants). I would happily add one for the right price, but admittedly that price will have to be ridiculously,
unrealistically low. A 50/1.7 fits my needs just fine, and even if it doesn't, I have a couple 50/1.4 as well.

FA31. My favorite lens is the FA77. I have several Limiteds on my wishlist, (DA21, FA43, FA31), but the FA31 will likely
be the one to get pushed to never. It's very pricey. It's actually big for a Limited. And I already have a few excellent 28mm.
The same things can be said for the K30/2.8.

Anything longer than a 200mm. I hate bulky lenses. Short FL lenses can be kept compact as long as the design is smart,
but long FL seem to have no option but to be big. The only 200mm lens I own is a Tele-Tak 200/5.6, which is downright
petite for telephoto lens, especially of its age. Nonetheless, that long proboscis quickly annoys me and so I rarely use it.
Same is true for most any other lens that is longer than it is wide. The only exception is my Vivitar 90/2.5 Macro. That lens
is almost stupidly overbuilt but I use it solely on a tripod in a fixed location for product shots, so its bulk is almost irrelevant(*).
*Almost but not quite. I still occasionally bump that protruding bulk when swapping out subjects in front of the lens.

Come to think of it, and speaking of K lenses, I've always also lusted for the K 28 3.5, but could never justify the price they are going for now, especially when the M 28 3.5 is so good (and was so much cheaper).
I lucked into a K28/3.5 as part of a lot and it has become one of my favorite lenses. I also own a M28/3.5, which I admire
but do not love like the K.

Since the philosophy of my hobby originally was to buy Pentax lenses, try them, sell them and buy the next one there are very few I’ve ‘missed’ trying. I recommend this philosophy to those who feel financially precluded from buying and keeping an interesting lens.

Lately I’ve sort of stopped selling them and unintentionally ended up with a collection of lenses, if you will. I really did not set out to collect gear - I just accumulated stuff, so there’s just nothing left I jones after, except maybe -
  • SMC 15/3.5 (K or m42). If I came across a nice AL version WITH the case and caps I might be tempted
  • A sharp, modern 50 in K-mount. Oh. Wait.

Which lens or lenses have I always wanted but never managed to acquire? There are many.
A series lenses. SMCA 100mm/2.8 Macro, 85mm/1.4 135mm/1.8, the K series 500mm,
1000mm, and 135-600mm lenses. (I have these only in takumars).

BUT, I already own many great lenses, I really don't need any more, what
I really want is a K-1 mark II BODY. I just have too many bills to pay at the
moment to buy one. Boo.

For me it would be a 300mm f/2.8. I get a bad case of lens envy when I see a pro at a sport event with one. Since my film days I had to make do with a 200mm f/4 and a 400mm f/5.6. First world problem, I suppose.

I did get a 200mm f/2.5 last year. It helped to relieve some of the pain, but was not a complete cure. The APS-C crop factor makes it a 300mm equivalent but the bokeh is about one stop less magic. So I still lust after a 300mm f/2.8. If I do get one, I will probably complain about how heavy it is. Another first world problem.

Another one is a 50mm f/1.2. I don't think I will ever get one. They are rare and very expensive. Not enough of a difference compared to the 50mm f/1.4 I already have to make it worth the asking price. Or is it?

about ten years agp I bought a K50/1.2 mint in the box for $325. Its in such nice shape Im afraid to use it. So I cant tell you if its worth the money or not. Mine is in the box, and the box is probably just collecting dust.
At that time the A50/1.2 lenses were going for around $400, now there around $700, That's another lens I lust after but its out of reach probably for good.

You know that's not helping, right?
Still, I am unlikely to buy one since I have the Sigma 30 1.4 Art and that lens kills a lot of LBA/GAS for me.

The K28/3.5 is so great overall performer, I seriously doubt the sigma, or any 1.4 design is going to beat it at F8.
Flare would be the F1.4's enemy.

AFAIK there was also a Porst 50mm f/1.2 in K mount. They are even more rare than the Pentax ones. I am not picky. A Porst, Pentax K or Pentax A would all work. but the A is the dream.

gotcha - the Porst is a 55mm, along with the Cosina, Ricoh, and Revuenon 55mm f1.2 lenses....

and just so you know - the Porst is amazing...

well, I got mine a dozen years ago in a big package deal and it wasn't described well, you
kinda had to read between the lines and blowup poor ebay images to figure out it was part
of the deal. That's why it went for the price it did. I got lucky.
