The one lens that you just ended up never getting

Continuing the "one lens" series which lens have you always wanted to get, but you ended up never buying? For whatever reason - you have another lens that you are happy with in that focal length, or because it got too pricey or hard to find, or simply because you never got around to go looking for it?

I think for me it's the Samyang/Rokinon 16mm f2... I have always wanted it to complete an "all primes" kind of kit (my widest prime now being 24mm, which isn't really that wide on APS-C). After the DA 16-45 came by, and f4 ended up being enough at 16mm for most of my uses, I just never got around to saving up for one, even though they're not that expensive in the used market, though they seem to have become a bit hard to find. I still want one, but I have no idea when I'll finally get it... or if I'll ever get it.

I also wanted a 17-50 f/2.8 lens (or 16-50) but that doesn't count, I think, because I no longer feel the urge to buy one, also due to the DA 16-45.

I've just been discussing 28's and figured this might be the one to get (to better my M28 3.5). But I've just seen what they sell for... Exactly the same reaction as you!

Edit: just realized i've been discussing it with you on the other thread, @ChristianRock

Come to think of it, and speaking of K lenses, I've always also lusted for the K 28 3.5, but could never justify the price they are going for now, especially when the M 28 3.5 is so good (and was so much cheaper).

I've always wanted the FA31/1.8 Limited, but never been able to convince myself to spend the money on it. I've spent that kind of money on other things, though, so I'm not sure why I never got the FA31. Maybe it's because I know that the 43 and 77 would surely follow. Fairly recently, I bought the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art, and while I don't pretend it's in the same league, it's satisfied my desire for something fast around this focal length. I feel like I'm more-or-less set with modern AF lenses now, so I guess the FA31 will remain my "one that got away"

The DA 21. I spent so much time deciding between it and the DA15 with the expectation that what ever I'd decide I'd get the other next. And while I love the 15 I never did get the 21. And now the existence of the K1 makes me wary of investing in ASPC only glass even though I have no immediate plans to go full frame. Are these classic ltds going to end up as orphans?

FA*200 macro - desire is strong, but availability is limited and the going price is ridiculous.

K28/2.0 and F*300/4.5 are not far behind, but for now I'll continue to "make do" with the F28/2.8 and DA*300/4.0

SMC K 15. Such a beautiful lens, but every time I’m about to pull the trigger, I buy something else, like a DA 20-40 or a K-1

My lens world is full of trades and compromises, driven mainly by my photography hobby budget. I think I have a decent kit of lenses ranging from a 1950s Auto-Takumar 55/2 to several DA Limiteds to my most recent acquisition, an FA 43 Limited.

Yet, some lenses remain on my 'someday, maybe, perhaps' dream list:

DA 70 Limited: The focal length is covered by my beloved DA* 50-135, and I also have a gorgeous mint S-M-C Takumar 85/1.8.
FA 77 Limited: same.

FA 31 Limited: I'm well covered in this focal length region -- K 28/3.5; K 30/2.8; and DA 35mm Limited. (I know, I know, they're not equal to the FA 31...)

Something 17-50mm/2.8. I got a DA 18-135mm a couple of years ago, which I use for traveling and general walk-about, but think a 17-50 could be useful. For now, I make do by carrying the DA 21 and 35 Limiteds in addition to the 50-135.

The k 15mm 3.5 is a lovely bit of kit. I got one last year. It has a built in hood but you need to use your hand to shield it from the sun too.

The one lens that I always wanted was a 300mm f/2.8 in Canon FD mount (I was a Canon guy back in the film days). It would have been awesome for night football and basketball, but I never even came close to having the means to buy one.

After Canon made my entire FD kit obsolete by introducing a new, totally incompatible, lens mount for their autofocus cameras, I started to switch over to Pentax.

I eventually ended up with the Pentax F* 300mm f/4.5 ED IF... which just happens to be (A) the finest lens I have ever used, and (B) my all-time favorite lens. So I guess that I'm glad that Canon made me switch to Pentax way back when!

Today, I no longer have any desire for a monstrosity like a 300mm f/2.8.

None of that helped me justify not buying it.

I had a voigtlander 15 f/4 in a m39 ltm. I loved that lens on film and wish I’d never sold that kit. Now, with the K-1, I’m dreaming of that 15mm again...
