Ben, the combo still leaves you with mm envy at an event.

This year I was in Rockford TX, and took a cruse out to see the whooping cranes, as Rockford is the wintering grounds. my sigma 70-200 F2.8 and 2x TC was the shortest, lightest , and also the slowest lens there.

The only thing I can say is that I was able probably to get more photos, because I could actually lift my lens
Yep - that is the most important reason I had, to NOT buy the FA 80-200/2.8, simply too big and heavy. The Sigma is much better to handle and the IQ is very, very good, too.

And for the missing millimeteres I still have my fixed focal length lenses and a Bigma rolling in... Bothing would ofcourse beat a FA 600/4, but I wouldn't use it anyway...

maybe you wouldn't use a 600 F4 but I would.

I just don't want to afford it

Ha - if I could afford it without compromising other, more important things, I would sure buy it, for the pure lust of havin it. But I doubt I would actually use it often...
