Pentax-A 50mm f2.0 or Pentax-M 50mm f2.0

Hi,

I have two identical lenses, but I want to sell one and keep the other, but I have this dilemma about which to sell and which to keep. I need help deciding.
What is the "best" in terms of sharpeness?
Which one has the most market value?

Best regards,

GonšaloD

The reviews would suggest the two are equal performers. Suggest you do your own tests to determine which of your two lenses
is sharper. Otherwise, it's just a matter of deciding which feature you prefer most; the auto-aperture function of the A lens or the
better build quality of the M. The A might have a slightly higher resale value though both are bargain lenses.

I would say they are about equally 'sharp' and have about the same street value. Personally, I don't regard either of these lenses as being exceptional.. I've owned so many of the A 50 f/2 that the latest one I've owned (just for fun) I rubbed the front element with sand paper to try and soften the image for artistic pictures... it didn't turn out very well.

Why not keep the "A" version, since it allows for easier metering?

+1 to it comes down to auto functionality (with A position) versus build quality.
Personally if the A was in good shape, I would probably go that way as then you can use your cameras auto modes (P, Av, Tv etc) as intended.

These are great points! However, we don't know what camera OP is using.. perhaps he's using a camera like the K1000 without aperture contacts..
Hey OP @GonšaloD ! What camera you using?!

Since you only have 1 'A' body sell the A 50.

When you buy a 50/1.7 buy the M. The aperture ring of the A is known to fail.

If I buy the 50mm 1.4 should I buy the M too?

The aperture ring on the 1.4 is higher quality.

The A 50/1.7 was kitted with my Super Program in 1983. Yes, the aperture ring had issues almost from the start, but it never actually failed. In recent years, after I got the K-30, I successfully used it again, but then the lubrication gave out and I could never focus all the way out to infinity {but the aperture ring still works}
