I currently use a saucer shaped B&W rubber hood with their typically fine engineering. It's a delight, but more inconvenient to pack.
I note that current prices for the FA20-35 on eBay are higher than for the FA20. Even if it’s slower than the FA20, at least the 20-35 has a modestly-sized hood.

Yes, the well-designed dedicated bayonet hood is a definite plus for the FA20-35. I have some regrets over selling my copy.

I just picked a FA 20-35 here in the United States for $379 in excellent condition. The was another one that was selling for $419, but it appears to be gone now. I know the price on some of those FA 20-35's seems a bit much. There are a couple of Tokina 20-35's in the Marketplace.

There’s also a Pentax FA 20-35 in the Marketplace for a bit more, but US shipping only.

As an aside, I just read on another forum (no, not that one) that Canon’s 20/2.8 lens (presumably still available) hasn’t been updated since 1992. The Pentax FA20/2.8 was, according to the Lens Reviews data, first issued in 1995 and ceased production in 2004. We’ll have to wait until 2019 or later, so the Roadmap tells us, to see its successor.

Having selected the 20-35 to replace the DA21 on full frame, I can tell you that I find its hood huge! Since I mostly use it at night, generally I don't use the hood.

Ah, but have you seen the hood on the FA20?

No. I trust you that it's huge. Doesn't make the FA20-35's any smaller

Well, no. I’ve seen the FA20-35’s hood, so I take your point. What the FA20’s hood lacks in length, it more than makes up in diameter.

For the record, there’s an image on the Forum lens reviews:

For some reason, the picture doesn’t want to show up when I embed it.

That honestly looks like the A* 85 hood just cut down to a short length.

Did you add the IMG tags? I didn't have a problem in my post.

The A20/2.8 also uses the same MH-RB 67mm metal screw-in hood, I was lucky enough to have one included with the A20/2.8 I bough on the forum.

I also have them. The A20/2.8 is fairly petite so the hood isn’t quite as extreme as it appears. The hood for the Takumar/K 24/3.5’s is a beast by comparison.

I have changed my lens buying prerequisites to include the OEM hood and case, if either are hard to find. It frustrates me enough that I'd rather wait for the perfect lens to show up for sale, than to just get one missing the necessary accessories. The A20/2.8 is a good example, you could find 10 for sale, but only two have the OEM hood included.

Phil.
