Opinions sought on 18-55/ 50-200 Pentax lenses

A friend wants to get the Pentax K200D. I'm thinking of recommending that he get the kit lens (18-55) and while I've heard of good things with this, what is the quality like ?

There is also a sale on 50-200 Pentax and I would like opinion on the quality of this lens also.

When I say quality I'm asking about :

* Build-I know their the kit, but are they reasonably robust in construction
* Function- do they function well, smooth and quick in auto focus, etc. ?
* Picture quality -do they provide sharp, clear pictures ?
* Colour rendition- do they acccurate, good flesh tones, etc. ?

We're going to camera shops tomorrow AM. Thanks in advance.

Les

They are very very good entry level lenses. I have owned them both and still have my kit lens. would recommend them both w/o hesitation.

As for your questions, they are both plastic, compact, not robust. They function very well, neither of them are speed demons but you get what you pay for. They are both very sharp for what they are, the 18-55mm in particular is heads and shoulders above other manufacturers kit lenses for IQ and color. Once again, beggars cant be choosers here. They are great for what they are. If you want more, you're going to have to spend more.

I agree. They are kit lenses and not DA*'s, but their performance is still good.

If you don't mind springing for more money, the DA 55-300 might not be a bad replacement for the 50-200. More reach, similar (if not better) IQ.

The 18-55 is the best kit lens of all the brands. Depending on your friends level of experience, it makes a very good starter lens.
Here's a thread that Marc Langille posted with shots from the 50-200 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/34585-two-sunrise-landsc...etro-gear.html

You will find the 50-200 a very good lens. It produces very good qquality shots. It is small and lightweight and can be picked up at a very economical price. Quite recommendable for a lens of this price.

I've got both lenses and they are great lenses for the price, and great lenses to start out with.
