Helios 44m modification -success anyone?

Hi all, Having watched a youtube vid on modifying a Helios44 to exaggerate the swirly bokeh, i was wondering if anyone has actually done this and liked the results?
I've tried on two separate lenses, but even the center is very much blurred.

What the modification does, is basically take the front lens out, insert a small spacer and put the lens back reversed.

Anyone?

F.

if you google "petzval helios" images, you'll see some pretty good results, with a quite sharp center. its just a mystery to me how to get something similar, as for my two modded the results are mediocre at best...

i'm wondering that with the great variety in quality between the individual helios lenses, maybe i just got two lemons? (though without the mod, they're actually both quite nice?)....

Maybe you're missing something, or there is something not disclosed in the mods they're doing which you can't know. Check your steps (and most importantly your tolerances) one by one and then rewatch everything carefully to see if you can get hold of something they're not explicitly mentioning.

well, the tolerance is hard to determine - the spacer is to prevent the front lens touching the next lens group. I've got the measurement of the spacer down to the 10th mm, but no way of telling if the spacer compresses while you tighten the front lens back in position (printed it in PLA). In any case below some of the better results i've got...
