Is this a joke? Has anyone tried this 500mm?

I was searching to find a .pdf download of my K-5's owner's manual and came across this posting on The price would make this lens seem ridiculous, but, just in case this is a hidden gem, has anyone tried this lens? If so, what did you think?

It is a 500mm that comes with a 2x adapter. Similar lenses are all over Fleabay for under 200. USD. I suspect it is not even close to worth what they want. I saw a review of it online, but satisfaction with use is unlikely!

Save your money for a used Bigma or a good 300 or 400 here in the forums.

agreed. CA is not likely to be controlled as ED glass is expensive (and unlikely to be part of this lens).

If you found one at a car boot or junk sale for $20 - $30, I'd say it would be good fun to play with - but that's about it. Certainly not worth investing any more.

Neither hidden nor a gem - those Opteka/Bower/Samyang 500mm + 2x TC kits are common as sparrows and about as useful optically. The price IS a joke, as you can get one - new - for less than half that.

These things have been around forever too. I remember seeing adds for them in the back of Popular Photography in the late 70's.

They might be useful as a small club.

Useful only for clubbing bears. If you really want one check They come up all the time and never sell...most of them are T-mount so all you need is a K-mount T ring.

SMC TAKUMAR 500 mm f4.5

I have the M 42 version of this lens left over from my film days. I have tested it on my K 3 and K 1 with an adapter and it appears to work well. Long lenses have a limited usefulness because of the weight of the older SMC 500 and 1000 mm., but it does fill a niche for certain sport events and wildlife photography. Also, you would need a very study tripod to use this lens effectively. My lens is both manual focus and aperture. It takes some practice to master the all manual functions. One thing that is unusual is the filter mount is 49 mm and is in the rear mount, not in the front of the lens. You might pay more for a filter than the camera; the front lens is very large.

Exactly what I suspected, expect for the prevalency of their availability. Thanks everyone.
