DA 21mm + K20D

I just posted this question on the other forum. I'm posting it here too because I need some answers quick. I want to make my decision and move on. Your input would be greatly appreciated:

" I've read here and there that DA 21mm mis-focuses on K10D. I'm wondering if the lens behaves the same on K20D. I'm thinking about getting it but am a little gun shy because of the reported problems with this lens. "

So the DA 21mm isn't a recommended lens for use on a K10D?

The K10D has known back and front focusing issues with some lenses, particularly wide angles. The DA 21mm is one of those lenses.

The K10D's AF can be calibrated to adjust focus with up to 4 lenses but you'll need an authorised Pentax service centre to do the adjustments. When adjusted, the K10D will focus correctly whenever that particular lens is mounted.

On my K20D, the DA 21mm is perfect without any AF adjustments.

I posted a comparison testing report at the DPR over half a year ago:

K20D AF Accuracy Improvement Over K10D/K100D : Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

You can see the same DA21 lens focuses a lot better on K20D than it does on a K10D. From all of what I've seen and read, you are pretty safe if you plan to use the lens on K20D

A pro i know that uses pentax told me how the AF-related issues and inconsistencies with his lenses disappeared with his K20, K200 and K-2000/K-m, basically all the bodies after the K10 and K110.

So how would that work? You send them your Camera and the lens you want to have it syncing with?

Any idea what lenses *don't* work out of the box? Guess it's time to fire up Google again...

I had a significant back-focus problem with the 21mm on my K10D body. I sent both camera and lens to Pentax with an explanation of what the problem was. They fixed it and it works fine now.

By the way, both camera and lens were still under warranty so there was no charge.

Funny you should say that, but my K10D is intermittant with some of my lenses, it seems that it is a common problem. Also, it is very hit or miss with my Manual lenses too (more miss than hit) whereas my DS is spot on every time.

I do love my K10D, and with some lenses it is fine (FA50mm F1.4 and 50-135DA*) but the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 is my AF which is hit and miss, and my main lens on the camera.

Looks like I will have to get the K20D sooner rather than later, and have the K10D as prime backup (DS as secondary)

Thanks for this, I thought it was me that was the problem. obviously not.

Just find an M 20 f/4 and you won't have to worry about FF/BF at all!
