I just couldn't use a href or img src html tags, don't know how it works around here.
Not bad!

the Sigma 70-300 is not true macro. it has the ability to do close up like what a macro lens is capable but not at 1:1 magnification that a true macro can offer.

as far as the 55-300 doing macro, just put a marumi diopter lens or Raynox lens on it/

How do I then know which lens is true macro, when it has written it is macro lens, but you say it isn't? Is there a way of knowing? I know I sound very lame, please be patient with me

true macro lens in general are prime lenses, not zooms. the zoom macro that you have is a pseudo macro which means it can focus closely which resembles that of a true macro, but not close or sharp enough to be considered as macro level lens.

true macro in general have 1:1 magnification ratio. the advertised zoom macros, dont come close than that.

So is there any true macro lens which is also zoom? I have to admit that not having the zoom is a problem for me, as I'm not primarily macro oriented so the zoom is pretty important to me.

Actually Nikon did make a zoom lens with macro capability with the AF-D Zoom Micro-Nikkor 70~180mm f/4.5~5.6 ED.

it doesnt go to 1:1 magnification ratio and it's not available for the K-mount.

Well of course I know it doesn't come in K-mount but it does come close at 1:13 at the long end (you can use a 6T close-up lens for 1:1), just figured I'd clarify the bit about zoom lenses and macro. I had this expensive Nikkor in the past and it is really very good. It would be great if Pentax came out with one.

Yes, but you probably won't like or want it: the Schneider Betavaron 50-125mm fixed-focus enlarger zoom, with arbitrary aperture marks. It was meant to be used in print-production labs, with the enlarger locked into position and the lens zoomed to print at various scales. But I abuse the poor thing by mounting it on my K20D with a bit of extension -- 28mm for general photography, 36mm for killer macro. Maybe I need a helicoid? I write a bit about it here. As I say, using it is tres weird. Every twist of the zoom changes the focus and aspect. But it's a real macro zoom, indeed. Be careful of what you wish for.

Then you're a perfect candidate for the Raynox 150. Stick that on the front a of a telephoto zoom and you've got as much magnification or more than any true macro lens. Far better quality and higher magnification than the "macro" feature built in to any zoom.

I dont mean to hijack your thread, but what are your opinions on the Pentax 55-300 vs. the Sigma/Tamron 18-200 as an all purpose zoom lens?

This thing? I can't see what mount it has, I think that sigma is 58mm Raynox DCR-150 1.5x Macro Lens DCR-150 - B&H Photo Video
