Film Travel Kit - Lens Suggestions

Hi everyone,

I'm heading off to New York and Montreal for a couple weeks and I'm planning on taking my ME Super and 2-3 lenses with me. I haven't done much travel photography before, but I'd like to keep things light, and take up as little space as possible. I imagine most of what I'll be doing will be street photography. I'm choosing between the following:

-Super Tak 50mm f/1.4
-SMC Tak 28mm f/3.5
-Auto Tak 35mm f/3.5
-Pentax F 35-70mm f/4
-Pentax K 55 f/1.8
-Pentax M 135 f/3.5

I was thinking of either sticking with the 50mm and 28mm taks, or the three k-mount lenses. I figure not switching out the m42 adapter would be kind of nice. What sort of kit would you all suggest?

28, 50 and a point n' shoot around 35mm 2.8/3.5 (ish)

That's what I'd be using personally - I get most of my usage from Oly Xa/xa2 type things.

I don't personally use longer lenses much ymmv

With what you have, the K55 would have to go. If you use the 135, take it also. The only other one you need is a 28, and you have the Takumar. For many years, my 3 lens kit was a 28, 50 and 135. Then I developed LBA. The rest is history.

28, 50 and 135 sound like a good idea to be set for all.

+1 for 28, 50 and 135, although I often go with just 35 and 135 around the city

Sounds embarrassingly familiar! That was me and my ME for 30 years or so. Now I've got half a dozen digitals and 15-20 lenses!!

Same story for me. Used the 28/55/135 kit from 1975 to 2008, then everything changed because of LBA..........

Take the three Taks, maybe leave the 35mm if you want less weight/space. Maybe look into a longer M42 option such as the 135/3.5 to avoid switching out the adapter, it's a very common and cheap lens.

Take the m42 28 and 50 and buy a 135 in one of the shops on the trip. Or take the k 50, m 135, and buy a 28 or 35 on the trip.

Wow, thanks for all the feedback everyone! Seems like taking the 135 with the 28 and 50 is the most popular option here, I guess the adapter isn't too much of a hassle. Or I could always take the K 55 instead of the Tak 50, and that way just leave the adapter on the 28. IQ haven't noticed much too difference between the 55 and the 50, and half a stop isn't gonna get me that much farther at night I think. From my understanding the K 55 is nearly identical to the takumar 55 f1.8 anyway? So I imagine it must be fairly similar to the 50, just maybe less of that pretty bokeh. Anyway, cheers guys!

That's also a good plan. My only concern is that the adapter has a spring and doesn't mount and unmount quickly. You have to remove the lens to get it off.

Funny thing is, the next lens I bought was an 85. I don’t have that lens any more, but it’s been replaced three ways from Sunday.

Yeah, that'll be a little annoying, but workable. Would be much more annoying if I was taking more than one tak with other k mount lenses though. If I find a decent looking 28mm K-mount in NYC I'll grab one, I imagine it won't be hard to find. I live in Edmonton, Canada, and pickings for old/second-hand lenses are slim unless you get lucky on craiglist/kijiji. Will be nice to have a look in proper camera shops in much bigger cities!
