S-M-C Takumar 35mm f/3.5 rear element ring - what is it?

Hi all,

I'm curious if anyone knows what is the outer ring on the rear element of this s-m-c 35mm f/3.5 takumar lens. I'd have guessed it's haze? Or is it just dust?

Many thanks!

Looks like fungus to me, but could it be disintegrating glue?

I don't think it's fungus. It doesn't seem to have the spider-web shape that fungus does. Although presumably there are other kinds of fungus?

Maybe just an area that is out of the way of being cleaned.

Based on the single image and no other information, I would say that the 'ring' is characteristic of a deterioration of the adhesive between the two rear-most lens elements, which is often called 'element separation'.

The two elements in question are normally cemented together, as seen in the lens diagram at: S-M-C/Super/Auto Takumar 35mm F3.5 Reviews - M42 Screwmount Wide-Angle Primes - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

A repair would require separating the two elements and re-cementing them -- not a straightforward procedure.

Thanks all for your input. I got the first roll developed and got the scans back. The images look very sharp across the frame, and plenty contrasty. I googled for some images of lens separation, and it looks different than the lens I have. Maybe the edges just need a careful cleaning, indeed?
I ordered a lens cleaning brush from B&H, so hopefully that will help.
