Not strange but certainly unusual. I came across a Vivitar (Cosina) 50mm f1.8 on shopgoodwill. After receiving the lens I noticed the s/n was QMOD-xxxx instead of 9xxxx. Found out QMOD is an acronym of Quality Management & Organizational Development.
My supposition is this was an inspection sample sent ahead so Vivitar could approve the lot before loading the boat rather than ship pallets back and forth to Japan. Presumably Vivitar would have held it for a time in case of customer issues needing traceability, so how it got into the 'wild' is anybody's guess.
