Replace DA 15 and Rokinon 8mm with DA 10-17?

I'm considering the question in the title. I have the wide angle covered with a 16-85, so on paper this makes sense and I get to reduce the number of lenses. For my day to day I rarely use such wide lenses so this is mostly kit used to travel (short or long trips, usually involving hiking when I can't take more than a couple of lenses). Any thoughts? Thanks for the input.

I think I'd rather have a rectilinear lens than fish eye most of the time. Sigma 8-16 seems like nice alternatives.

My 2 cents, lots of ways to deal with this question

Thanks. I am also a little weary of letting the da 15 go, it's a very nice lens and I only have one strong ND filter, of 49mm.

I think, honestly, I would just stick with the solution you've already got. The DA 15 is a pretty cool item.

I had the Rokinon 8mm and sold it in favor of the DA 10-17mm zoom - it's such an amazing lens...

I do not have the 15Limited, but from what I've read, it's normally not a lens that's sold off in favor of another...

I really like my 10-17, plus ACR (and I assume Lr) can de-fish in post if you wish.

Comparing a fish eye lens in conjunction with Fisheye-Hemi software to a rectilinear lens, I now prefer a fisheye for times I want a very wide FOV. Specifically:

1) the fish eye lens plus Fisheye-Hemi results are actually more realistic (here I am using a FF fisheye lens on a cropped sensor dslr)

2) the fisheye is much wider FOV than the same FL in a normal lens

3) unless using a FF fisheye on a cropped sensor lens, and even then, I find I almost always need to use fisheye hemi--so there are more steps in the pp--and you need to use software that accepts fisheye hemi (e.g., photoshop)

If you look in the PF reviews of software you can see an example where I compare fisheye lens (the Q #3) w/ and w/o fisheye-hemi. I find about 1/3 of the theatre photographs I take (and give to the producer) are taken with the Pentax 16 mm f/2.8 (FF) fisheye on a cropped sensor K-5.

It's diificult to answer because they're quite different lenses... The DA10-17 is a amazing lens, but isn't a replacement for a rectlinear lens like the DA15mm. Yes, at 17mm it's easly corrected to rectilinear but the QI will suffer and not be as good as what you get with the DA15. On the other hand, the DA10-17 is more versatile and will allow you to do things you couldn't do with the DA15... But the DA15will be a better choice when it can be used.

The Rokinon could probably be replaced by the DA 10-17 without losing much, if anything, in QI while gaining AF and more versatility. The huge advantage of the DA 10-17 compared to fisheye primes being that zooming allows you to control not only the coverage but also the strength of the fisheye effect.

So, in the end, it really depends on your needs...

I'm a big fan on the 10-17 and have and rarely use the 15mm Limited. But they are two different lenses and I would not let either one of them go. I like the fisheye eye effect and enjoy experimenting with it. Both lenses are extremely wide and will provide ultra wide distortion. I only do minimal correction for the ultra wide and shoot as horizontal as possible to minimize the distortion, and then crop as needed. This will also work well for the fisheye when there are not a lot verticals in the image. However as i noted the 15 does serve a purpose because it has beautiful rendering and my green version makes such beautiful starbursts. Its also very nicely compact.

I'd rather have the DA12-24 to complement the 16-85 in this scenario.

The 10-17 is a very different lens from DA15 Ltd. I wouldn't sell my DA15, its an amizing small wide angle lens wich always fits in the bag.

Thanks for all the inputs! Looks like I'm not making any changes to my setup, the more I think about it the less I feel like parting with the da 15
