Do I use them toward the wide open. Yes, I used to but that was mainly using film as I tended to use either 50 or 100 ASA. Are they still useful on digital? Yes I think they are for several reasons. Firstly, they often have a "different character" than the slower equivalents. But 2 of the biggest advantages I find is that they are much easier to manual focus. The image seems to "Snap into Focus" rather than drift in. They also result in a much brighter finder which can aid composition.
