Now that I own a fast 50 I couldn't live without one. So I'd take the 50mm f1.4

Or the just announced DA* 55 1.4 could be the one you are looking for.

Taff mate, it's kind of an unwritten rule. You've got to have the 50. Get the 40 after that by all means but you should get the 50.

More stops! MORE STOPS!!!

Like I say, the 40's a bit of a bastard* focal focal length. It's a good lens, but it's just not wide enough, not long enough, and not that fast. It's built for size, and Pentax does that better than anyone else around.

Grab the fifty! They'll be getting rare. And pentax doesn't seem to be making much fast glass any more.

MOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRREEEEE STTTTTTOOOOOOPPPPPSSSS!!!!

*"Bastard" as in "intermediate".

WOW, it seems the general concensus is the 50, 1.4
when will the new DA*55 1.4 be released i wonder?
I s'pose the price will be far more than they are asking for the FA50 here in AUS (A$330)
not much for a nice piece of glass

At one stage, it was 80 AUS dollars for a good used copy.

I sold my copy for 90 Aus dollars. 2 years ago.

Thanks to the sale success of k10d with no lenses avaiable to purchase earlier on. All the fa lenses are just ridiculously expensive.

roentarre, u must be sik as a dog now

I would love to see how much the new da*55 1.8 is going to sell for, it will obviously give weatherproofing which would be luvlee as my usual walkabout lens

sometimes I buy the cheaper option in anticipation of getting the "new" lens, but I think that this time I should be patient and get the *

does anybody have any idea how soon the new DA* will be available for sale in Australia??

Go for the 50mm, remember it's still possible to get a new 50mm F1:1.2 A series (manual focus) lens, it's a real hunny

The FA50 Good at f2.8

If you look at the MTF charts on photozone.de, the FA50 has better center sharpness at f2.8 than the DA40. The borders are not quite as good but depending on what you are shooting, that may be a plus.
I am going to have to agree with the mob here and recommend the FA50. You don't get a chance to shoot at f2.0 or f1.4 with the 40. I just shot at a reception last night with the FA50 and FA31, no flash, indoors in dim light. Would not have been able to get most of the shots with a f2.8 lens.
