Late to the 40mm XS party

Just couldn't resist my LBA when I saw this minute pancake fly by on eBay (and in the UK so no duty/VAT issues either). It was dropped off by my friendly mailman this morning and it is, for lack of a better word, cute as hell! Not just cute but darned capable as well which I found out when I took it for my daily doggy-walk in the nearby park. Admittedly, the purple fringing wide open is pretty horrendous but other than that, it delivers beautiful color and exquisite detail sharpness even in the corners and edges of the image.

Everyone else probably knew that already but I'm famous for lagging behind the rest of the world at least a year or 3-5.

Welcome to the party!
Yeah PF is pretty much its only downside... other than that it's almost always with me.

How bad is the purple fringing? Have any example photos to show? I was thinking of picking this lens up but I personally can't stand purple fringing

I hope you enjoy your XS and much as I enjoy mine. I really don't think PF is a big problem with this lens. Many other forum members agree. Here's the XS photo thread

Here's an intentionally bad example SOOC except for resizing - I really took this one on purpose so I wasn't surprised either.

My only gripe with it is that I wish it had a shorter minimum focusing distance. I haven't had too much experience with purple fringing from this lens.

My gripe is the cap. I lost 2 so I got a step up ring and pinch cap.
Enjoy this little beauty.

I am resisting this lens! I recently got the DA 21 and DA 70. Now I understand why people get the whole set.

(It's easier to resist the DA 15. I know it's wonderful but my composition skills are not up to that width.)

Thanks, that kind of fringing is expected I think. Maybe the severity is also a copy by copy basis too?

It certainly is a fun little lens, it lives in my bag and I use it as a walk around kit paired with the 21.

Yikes. Mine does not PF that much.. infact I need to go back and see if it is even noticeable. I may have a great copy then.

I suggest it is copy by copy, get little, if any PF on my copy, and I shoot in all sorts of conditions.

I have this, the 40 Limited, and the 'M' 40mm. I guess I just like pancakes.
They are all much of a muchness, especially the XS and the Limited, hard to tell apart blind testing.
They do sell pinch caps which will fit (i believe they're aimed at video cameras) on the Well Known Auction Site, the little rubber one supplied is just begging to get lost. On the other hand a step up ring will allow the use of filters if you're wanting them.
It would also allow the use of a hood which helps with IQ, only thing being if you hang a hood and filter mount on the front there's not much point buying the XS lens
Apologies for the awful mobile pic but you get the idea.

Step-up ring and the hood from the 40 Ltd works well on the XS and M-series 40's. Doesn't noticeably vignette on film.

40mm is sort of an odd focal length on crop. Some folks seem to like it a lot. I think it's too narrow to be useful, too wide to really isolate the subject. On full frame 40mm is really nice.

I love this lens, I'm currently however not seeing much use of mine as I own a HD DA 35/2.8 Macro, which I feel takes the lead in terms of versatility. So I'm selling my rare Silver edition (only 5000 ever produced I believe!), my price is a tad higher to reflect this however (so don't get too excited lol), but I just feel I can't let it go for much less than this because of it's rarity status. I can tell you, it does look very nice on a silver camera, and even more of a unique talking point on a black camera!
