The center softness is more due to me missing focus than the lens itself. The edges are by design for producing the swirl effect. I don't know if you're familiar with the lens but in case you're not, the lens will produce the Helios swirl and do so easier than the Helios. There is also a vignetting control to add vignetting via a second set of diaphragm blades and this control will also increase the swirl effect.
