some Q's with a lens i wuld like to buy

Hello guys , i'm kinda new here as u can see.

2 months ago i bough the Pentax K100D , great camera.
until now i used the kit lens (18-55 f3.5-5.6)
most of my photos are in dark area , with low light
and mainly pplz / potrait , from a distance of 1-2 meters.
no more no less.
so i need a lens with 2.8
the only Pentax lens i found is the 28-70 2.8
this one :
Pentax Imaging: smc P-FA 28-70mm F2.8 - FA - Zoom - Digital & 35mm - Lenses - Cameras by Pentax

so my Q's is :
this lens will feet my K100D ? (ofcurse with the AF on)
is this lens is good for low light pictures/pictures for distance of 1-2 meters?
any other sussgetion of 2.8 lens?

PS : i prefet Pentax lens / i saw the new lenses , but they are too expesive for me. and cant wait until they will be out.

Thanks , and sorry for my english.
Sagi.

FA* 28-70/2.8 is no longer in production. From time to time there are some on ebay and cost a lot, last I saw was 1300 USD.

Just wait few weeks and order new DA* 16-50/2.8 which list price is 900usd.

Of course FA* will work without any problems with your K100D as other Pentax lenses does not matter how old they are.

Scrap your idea on the 28-70. It is uber expensive right now, so consider the tamron 28-75mm. F2.8 and much cheaper.

Tamron 28-75/2.8 Xri has very good reputation.

Consider a 50mm lens. You can easily buy used 50mm lenses in different models such as:

f1.4
f1.7
f2.0

The 1.4 is currently made in an auto-focus version. The 1.7 is available used in both auto-focus and manual focus. The 2.0 is available used in manual focus, and at very affordable prices.

If you decide to use older manual focus lenses, first be sure you understand the difference between:

1. K mount / screw mount
2. "M" lens / "A" lens

Here is a link which will show you all the 50mm lenses (for Pentax) currently available on eBay. This should help you see what types of lenses are available and about how much they cost.

At that 1-2 meters away, you might find 28mm × 1.5 crop factor a bit tight. What focal length do you find yourself using most often? Do you end up zooming a lot, or normally stick to one end of the range?

28-70mm is actually a great range, even on the K10D. Although 70mm is a bit short, the IQ is flawless accross all focal lengths, and the lens allows for 1:4 macro.

If do you find this lens and are willing to pay the price, go for it. I'd guess one pops up on eBay around once every few months.

Have a look at this thread for more info: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/2846-its-here.html

Sagi, there are several fast lenses in this range

most of them are affordable. Unfortunately, if you want to stay "all Pentax" you're kinda out of luck because none of them are pentax. Besides the Tamron already mentioned there is the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5. I don't own this lens myself but I've heard nothing but good things about it. It's also "relatively" cheap at about 360 USD new.
There is also a Tokina 28-80 f2.8. This lens is not new, but I have seen it frequently at KEH Cameras and used cameras available from KEH Camera Brokers.. I do not know where you live but KEH does ship internationally.

I am not a big fan of zooms. That said, I recently purchased the Sigma 17-70mm, and have been very impressed by the image quality. It is every bit as good, image wise, as the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8, or 28-80 f2.8. It is not as fast on the long end, but with the shake reduction of the k100d this is not a problem. The only thing the 2.8 really adds is a little more room to be creative with depth of field...

This Sigma is a really good lens, in use by a lot of people that really enjoy it. Having said that, it's bulky, the lens hood is *WAY* too useless for it (you might want to look at getting an after-market lens hood for it), and it can be iffy with AF... although that's usual with 3rd party lenses.

The other suggestion of the 28-75mm Tamron is also worth looking at. Has one of the best reputations among this class of 3rd Party lenses out there.. (and even holds its own against the first party choices).

I guess it depends on which one meets your budget more, and which one is more what you're looking for on either end of the zoom range.

Could you elaborate on that please?

I also mostly shoot low-light portraits, so I'd recommend one of the various fast 50mm lenses Pentax has made over the years. The lens I use most is an old Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 I got on eBay for about 30 bucks (U.S.). A simply wonderful lens in the hand, and takes beautiful photos.

Depending on your budget, you might also consider the 43mm f/1.9 limited, which normally goes for about US$500.

Personally, I'd much rather buy several used primes than one new zoom, but that's just me.

I can understand your feelings about the crap shoot that is eBay.

That being said, just this evening I came home to find the postman had delivered an SMC-A 28mm/2.8 that I bought from Harry Meyers on eBay. It's in mint condition and I love it already. Since I also have an SMC-A 50mm/2.0 it looks as though the kit lens will be coming out of the bag and going on the shelf.

Perhaps you might consider a 28mm prime?
