Tamron 28 - 105 vs. Pentax 18 - 50

All,

I have the Tamron 28-105mm lens, and enjoy it. I have the Tamron SP 60-300 Adaptall (and TC) for 60-600mm lengths. On special right now is the Pentax 18-50mm for $75. I am tempted by the 18-50 range, and the Pentax has slightly better ratings. On the third hand, the 18-55 AL WR is $80, and has weather sealing..not that I'm out in the elements much.

I should note that I also have the plastic fantastic 50mm.

Thoughts as to whether I keep the 28-105 and whether the 18-50 or 18-55 is a better choice?

Assuming you're shooting a crop camera, you don't have anything wide.

Either the the 18-50 or 18-55 would compliment the tele zoom well. Both are weather sealed.

Both the Pentax lens you mentioned above are weather sealed but 18-50 version has the quiet motor.

BTW can you share where 18-50 is sold for that price? I would like to grab one.

Thanks.

There are two versions of the 18-50 and many many versions of the 18-55. The DAL version of the 18-50 doesn't come with a good and hasn't got the HD Coatings. I own the DAL 18-50 and like it but I shoot my 18-135 more.

That Tamron 28-105 is really a good lens, I used it until replaced with a DA 18-135. You won't make much selling it these days so I would keep it. You do have a need for the 18-27 range The 18-50 is also WR, retractable and has that compact flush hood.(if it's the HD version). The retractable feature would make it really nice to fit into a small nook of a bag.

Nothing wrong with keeping your Tamron 28-105mm. But as Sandy says, it provides no wide angle. You cannot actually compare this lens with the other two since the focal lengths, and therefore the uses each would be applicable for would be too different I've had and used both the DA 18-55mm and the newer 18-50mm, which I have found to be superior in every way. Faster, quieter, more accurate AF, in particular. It is also remarkably compact when retracted for carrying. The price of $75 is a very good deal if it is in fine condition.

I went ahead and purchased it on Usedphotopro.com (the 18-50 DAL SMC DC WR RE). $80, inc. tax, and free shipping, in excellent condition. I've bought 3-4 items (including my K-3) from Roberts and always had good luck. They also have a good rep.

that lens doesn't qualify for the 10% savings. Use 'TAKE5' as coupon code to get 5% discount.

Yeah I have bought few lenses from them and all are very good, fast shipping and excellent customer service too. You also get reward points which you can use for future purchases.

My dal 18-50 was around that price from a forum member. That's a good buy.
