Your memory coincides with my experience. I bought my MC Zenitar 16/2.8 Fisheye new from Russia about a decade ago. Aside from needing adjustment to infinity focus (easily done using live view), it has been a fine lens on both film and APS-C digital. Care should be taken to purchase the K-mount version rather than M42 since the latter does not have an A/M switch.
