I believe (and please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong) but I believe 'limited' refers to a limited number manufactured per year, not a set number in total.

.

I may be wrong, but I think 'limited' in this context is more like a 'limited' Buick or Cadillac line - not really throttled in manufactured numbers, just a higher-quality distinction.

(The silver 77's do kinda seem to be 'limited' in numbers, though.)

Yep, that is right, Limited as in Limited production, rather than Limited Edition/Numbers etc.

They take longer to build over the "standard" range, due to higher quality optics.

I was often being teased by my friends using different brand of gear.

"Limited lenses are rather limiting for you or you are very limited."

I assume this all stopped when:
a) they used the lenses in question, or
b) you got new friends

I always assumed that "limited" referred to "limited to people who don't have to justify such purchases to their wife" (or husband, or whoever). :P

I'd love to get a few limited lenses, but it seems so hard to justify...

Hehe

My grandmother used to tell me

"A friend is like a bridge in the journey of life and an enemy is like a wall along the path".

Even I do not need that many bridges in life, it does not hurt

Pentax blurb, from their lens catalogue:

The name “Limited Edition” does not mean that these lenses won’t be around forever. Far from it. Chances are they will outlive most cameras! The name instead refers to the fact that they are produced to higher tolerances than mass-produced lenses and assembled with even greater diligence, so their daily production output is limited. A discerning product for the discerning photographer.

Nothing about production runs though.

Yup, or the Subaru "Limited" trim line of their vehicles.
