Pentax lens has different mount

This might be a long shot. I was looking at a Pentax lens to buy from a private party and he said that it would not fit a k-mount and when I looked at it indeed it has a different mount installed, but uncertain if I would be able to restore it back to a k-mount? What would be involved? Perhaps not worth the bother. See photo.

Thank you.

Well it's hard to tell what mount that is from that small pic but is certainly isn't for pentax.
All digital age K mount (KAF) lenses have mounts with electrical contacts so this is vintage - no contacts. All vintage lens k mounts have a slot on one side for a second aperture lever (the aperture simulator) see the first pic here:

The Evolution of the Pentax K-mount - Articles and Tips | PentaxForums.com

which shows the slot prominently, left side of the mount. Also happens to have electrical contacts opposite.
So I would simply forget it it's not a pentax/pentax mount.

bigger/better pic would help, as would more info

why do these kind of threads always start as if there is national security involved?

I didn’t get the overall view but it’s a 400mm telephoto. Like I said, it’s probably not worth the bother.

Thanks.

I agree, but having never encountered this before, I wasn’t sure if this was done at a factory or an aftermarket modification. Also, I have no idea what it would cost to have it converted back to the k-mount.

The link was very informative, thanks.

I understand what you are saying, other photo would have helped, sorry. Not really overly concerned, just never encountered this before and was looking for some information.

But which one? The full model name will be written on the lens somewhere.

A quick glance through the lens database for 400mm primes shows (at the very least) two all-manual K mount versions (K and M series), a screw mount Takumar, a 645 mount and a couple in 6x7 mount. Personally, I have never seen any of them in the flesh but there will be plenty here who will have.

The one you have looks to have some sort of adaptor or mount replacement, but the image is too small and incomplete to be of much use.

You would know better than myself. Is that something aftermarket or factory?

I’ve never owned one. I’m no expert. But Petri was an OEM brand. Your seller should show you then entire mount and the Pentax markings.

If the lens is indeed a pentax lens that has had a mount swap, then provided the internal connections haven't been altered, or other non reversible alterations been made, it will mainly be a matter of getting hold of a pk mount off a junk lens that fits.

Agreed. No reason to part with real money unless it was something special. If it was the price of a cheeseburger and you felt like messing around with it for grins, sure, otherwise, find an unmolested one you know you can use and enjoy.
