DA 10-17 fisheye and FF

The Pentax DA 10-17 fisheye vignettes badly on FF for focal lengths below about 14.3 mm, but this vignetting appears to be entirely due to the built-in hood.

The DA 10-17 fisheye is the same lens as the Tokina 10-17, except that the latter is offered only in Nikon and Canon mounts. However, Tokina also offers versions without the built-in lens hood, which they claim to be FF-compatible.

This seemingly confirms the suspicion that optically, the DA 10-17 is capable of covering the FF sensor. If so, it would be such an easy fix for Pentax/Ricoh to offer another FF lens.

As far as I can see, short of machining it down, there appears to be no way to remove the hood from the existing DA 10-17. Has anyone heard of this being done?

I know there was some lively discussion awhile back in the Single In threads about shaving off the hood on that lens... I don't think a viable solution was ever made.....

If Pak above hadn't beaten me to it, by linking to the older thread, I would have suggested a straightforward Google search for "pentax fisheye shaving service", which gets you among the first two hits:

Pentax 10-17mm | 360pano.de

This should tell you two things: (1) It is absolutely doable. (2) There are even people who are experienced in this kind of thing and offer to do it for you "professionally".

The only catch, I'm not sure whether they would offer this to customers outside Europe. But maybe you can contact them?

Have never used their services and therefore cannot attest to the quality of their surgery, but it sure looks like a possibility if you're really intent on having your DA10-17 circumcised ...

No, the vignetting is not entirely due to the hood. The Tokina version with the hood for FF is like the Canon 8-15mm fisheye zoom: at the widest FOV, it's a circular fisheye. All the hood does on the DA 10-17 is prevent the lens on FF from being a perfect circular fisheye. Instead, it imposes a pattern over the circle:

Thanks for that. I didn't realise that was the case. I'll leave it as it is.

Oh my. That's some major surgery on a great lens just to get a circular fish eye effect on the K-1.
I've personally never been a man of the that circular effect, so I was fortunate enough to find a Sigma 15mm FE that covers the FF image circle.
Highly recommended, as it has the kind of IQ that the DA 10-17 has at 10mm on APS-C.

Yes...much cheaper to simply buy a Samyang 8/3.5!

Or you could dispense with the whole circular fisheye look and get a real FF fish-eye, like the Samyang 12/2.8 — or even better, track down a copy of the F 17-28 and you'll have an FF version of the DA 10-17!

I had the F17-28 (it's now with a mate in Finland), and still have the Samyang. Even though it isn't fully FF compatible, the DA10-17 is my favourite of the three - its minimum focussing distance is incredible and I prefer the character of its barrel distortion. I'm really looking forward to what the new version might offer.

Nice images and work funstone. Thanks for the illustrations. Thought about shaving my 10-17 for the K-1. Then Pentax released the new version. Ready to jump on it...until I saw photos at 10mm. It doesn't do circular fisheye correctly. The top & bottom of the circle is lopped off. That bothers me. Unfortunately I'll have to Pass.
Thanks,
barondla
