85mm f1.2?

Canon users are raving about this lens. I know that there is an equivalent for Pentax but are they still in production or do I have to scout ebay for this lens?

The equivalent is the discountinued A*85mm f1.4 (MF) or FA*85mm f1.4 both will rquire deep pockets and strong binoculars.

Better yet get a 77mm Limited for a much more resasonable $600.00 and even though the 85's are a bit better, they are not 3x $$ better by any means.

AFAIK, there's never been a Pentax 85/1.2. The FA*85/1.4 is out of production and is expensive on fleabay...$1300...

Thanks for that! I have the 77 which I bought when I couldn't find the 85. Since it is so expensive I won't bother considering it. Those who have or have used both the 77 and 85, how does the 77 compare to the 85?

I've used both and the 85 is indeed a sharper lens with a slightly smoother bokeh. In real world use though there is really only 2 reasons to own the 85mm over the 77mm Ltd. You afford it. or you are a pro making you full time income with it.

Otherwise the comparisons are moot. The 77mm Ltd is a top notch lens in all respects.

Btw. I just checked the price on the Canon. At $2000.00 the used 85's from Pentax are still a bargin.

85L is sacred among canon users. when I criticised the lens for some minor issues, the whole bandwagon of canon fanboys attacked me to the point of spamming my emails and websites. Even the long standing on line canon friends turned on you like a plague of group hysteria.

Well, it is a good lens because it does the autofocusing for you. Old version takes an average of 3 seconds to lock a focus under ideal lighting and 1.7 metre subject distance to the camera while the newer version is about 2 seconds. The lens does not fringe that much and the lumiscape post has been flagged around for quite some time about how A* 85 f1.4 trumps the corner sharpness comparing to 85L at f1.4 blah blah blah

Fa 77 ltd is good enough. Manual focusing the focal length 85mm with f1.2 is just not easy and not convinient.

BTW, do you know how heavy canon 85/1.2 is? Enough to dislocate the cervical spine even if you are not suffering from osteoporosis.

I have both the 77 and the A85/1.4. I prefer the 85 for several reasons. It is a better optic than the 77, which is saying a lot, as the 77 is absolutely stellar.

It's not as fast or as sharp as the 1.4 versions, but if you're really wanting the 85mm focal length, the M85/2 is considerably cheaper (usually $300-ish). This lens has received mixed reviews, with some calling it among the worst lenses Pentax ever produced, and others calling it the best M series lens bar none (and of course others in between). Check out the "M Club" thread here for lots of samples.

I really like the M85/2, though since I got the 1.4, I do admit to under utilizing it.

Yeah, I do but not as much as I did in the past. A lot of these nasty ones are just replaced by another batch anyway.

There is one very friendly canon forum that I go to. A small community but all are very friendly concentrating on photography instead of gear smearing.

Has anyone compared the Zeiss 85 1.4 to the Pentax-A 85 1.4?

Both should be superb lenses right? If anyone can get hold of both lenses and do a comparison it would be really interesting to see how they do against each other.

Any thoughts on this? I have been thinking of a fast 85mm and the Zeiss looks interesting but does it stand up to the Pentax version?
