Your favorite 35mm APS-C format prime lens

Hi All,

what is your favorite 35mm APS-C format prime lens and why?

EDIT: Long story short looking for 20-24mm prime lenses, I mean 35mm APS-C equivalent so that would be 20-24mm full format lenses.

As close to standard 35mm as possible not wide not tele. I am looking for standard 35mm APS-C lens means the same field of view as a 35mm lens on full frame.

cheers

Wolfie

Mine is the humble DA35 f/2.4. It's relatively small, very light, AF is reliably accurate and the IQ is very good indeed. Out of focus rendering is pleasant. It's just an all-round nice lens. I actually prefer it to my HD DA 35 f/2.8 Macro Limited, though that's an excellent lens too.

I don't know how strict you want to be regarding the 35mm focal length, but I'd also mention the Sigma 30 f/1.4 Art. People seem to love or hate this lens, and some have had problems with AF. I adore mine because of its distinctive and beautiful rendering, and using the centre focus point I've had no AF issues. It's inexpensive for what it offers, IMHO...

I think there might be some confusion here...

A 35mm lens when used on an APS-C camera will offer roughly the same field of view as a 50mm lens on full frame. A 24mm lens used on an APS-C camera will record roughly the same field of view as a 35mm lens on full frame.

Are you looking for a 35mm focal length lens to use on your APS-C sensor camera, or for a lens that will give you the same field of view as a 35mm lens on full frame?

short list for me:

DA21 Limited - tiny and hugely capable

Tamron Adaptall-2 01BB - the best way to make 24mm the new 28

Sigma 28/1.8 EX DG - stupidly sharp and the close-focusing makes this one a hit

Soligor C/D 35mm f2 P - film era superstar

DA 35 Macro Limited - stranded on a desert isle and have one lens? take this one...

OK... again, one of us might be getting a bit confused

For clarity:

A 35mm focal length lens is a 35mm lens whether it is used on an APS-C camera or full frame. The difference is, the full frame camera has a larger sensor which captures more of the image circle projected from the back of the lens - i.e. it captures a wider field of view. An APS-C sensor is "cropped" when compared to full frame, so it captures less of that image circle from the same lens.

If you want a lens for your APS-C camera that will capture a similar field of view to a 35mm lens on full frame, you'll need something around 24mm (or thereabouts). My choice would be the DA21 Limited, which is a cracking little lens

Does that make sense?

DA 35 Macro Limited.
It is really sharp, light, relatively cheap and it has macro capabilities.

For travelling light with just one standard prime lens, then it would be the HD 35mm Limited for the sorts of things I like to shoot (buildings, scenic and floral). It's beautifully built, optically great, and I like its effective slide-out lens hood. When I need a wide angle of view, I will take several over-lapping shots and make a composite image. If the interest here is only in wide angle lenses, then my choice would be the HD 21 Limited, but I would have to take along something longer as well. I like the compactness of the Limited primes, and have no desire to carry around even just one of the monsters now being produced.

so the OP is looking for advice regarding lenses which if used on an ASP-C sensor camera would give the same field of view as a 35mm lens would give on a full format sensor camera or 35mm film camera

I believe that 1.5 is the factor for Pentax APS-C

this article might help:

Crop Factor Explained

so of my lenses I have prime lenses: 28mm, 20mm and 15mm and a zoom 16-85mm that would fit the bill

according to the chart in the article, 17mm is a little short ( 25.5mm ) and 28mm is a little long ( 42mm ) so I will suggest if the OP is looking for a prime lens:

one of the Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 Limited either the SMC or HD version

Sigma 24mm F1.8 would be another option (bought mine for FF use rather than APS-C though) - it also has very impressive close focusing capabilities.

With an APS-C DSLR (before I had the Sigma, which is a recent aquisition) I liked the manual focus F2 Vivitar lenses in either 24mm or 28mm versions.

Just noticed that the OP has a lens that would do what he wants if he doesn't mind a zoom

Pentax K-5ii / HD DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 WR RE / Pentax-FA 80-320mm F4.5-5.6 / A 50 f1.7/ A 28 f2.8 / 50-200mm f4.5-6 SMC DA-L ED / Pentax-F 50mm F1.7

he could experiment with it and using the EXIF data find the " sweet spot " that does the best job and then look for a prime that is close if he doesn't want to use a zoom

My SMC Takumar 24mm/3.5 has been a pretty much permanent attachment on my little K-S1 since the day I bought the camera. In fact, I could happily superglue it on (don't worry, I won't). I use that combination for all my snaps of family and friends, and would have no problem spending the rest of my life with the 24mm as my only lens on APS-C (or the Takumar 35mm/3.5 on full frame).

I think it's quite strange that Pentax never made a modern autofocus 24mm specifically for APS-C cameras. I know they made the DA 21mm, but actually that 3mm is quite a big difference in field of view. Back in the film era, a camera maker that didn't offer a high quality 35mm prime lens would have got laughed out of business, so how come a good 24mm wasn't considered important when APS-C came along?
