Sigma 14mm F2.8 question

As I wanted something wider on FF than the ATX-Pro 20-35mm F2.8 that I already had I picked up a cheap 14mm F2.8 Sigma. It was cheap because the focus is heavy (i.e. borderline for AF but fine for MF) but otherwise it looks in good condition.

On playing with it the lens seems ok when there aren't any bright lights in frame, but with them in frame the issues have to be seen to be believed - take this (shot at F8 I think) as an example:

Anyone else using the lens that could let me know if my lens is knackered of if this is "normal" for the lens?

Cheers
Steve

I used to own this lens. I think it is normal. It's pretty bad for lens flare.

I love that shot! Lol. That is a special lens, something you'd want to use for wild shots but not an everyday use.

That is a very funky effect.

My recently acquired Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 is not great with flare, but it is the usual kind - no rainbows that mysteriously appear.

Seeing that you got it for cheap, just enjoy it and work within its limitations.

It really is useless when there is any light source in the frame - take this landscape I just shot, with a bright cloud in the top left:

I've had a Sigma 10-20mm for years now on APS-C and it's fine for flare - so I think for ultra-wide stuff I might just use that with the K1 in APS-C mode.

One thing I quite like to do with a super-wide is take night shots of building and street lights etc. and the Sigma is useless for that. I'm assuming it might just be the copy I have which I suspect is knackered.

Anyway I've added a Samyang 14mm F2.8 to the collection and from a first play that seems a lot better than the Sigma.
