. . . Hard to tell which he needed; both are available
I asked whether the OP wanted the XS and he posted:

This is an original(?) cap for the SMC 40mm Limitd. It's in two parts: the MH-RC 49mm hood and the screw in cap Very classy (if you have one that is!).
so he has the hood with a 30.5mm hole and needs a screw on cap to close the hole.

The OP was asking about the 40mm Ltd, but nearly everyone responded about the XS

Pentax Front Lens Cap for DA 40mm f/2.8 Lens - Black 31493

The original may be best; still available
That's actually a good price! I paid big $$ for the cap for my 20-40 Ltd, had to get it from Japan!

why not, it is, without a doubt, the " best lens in its class " so it deserves to be discussed a lot

I have the SMC-DA 40mm (not the XS), and I just use a standard 49mm lenscap from an old M50mm. Then I can screw in the lens shade when I need to, but I do not rely on keeping the tiny bit as a lens protector. I also have a SMC-DA Limited 70mm, so I can use the hood from that one on the 40mm (I have not seen significant vignetting, but still experimenting).

I guess I am the oddball here. I really like the screw on cap!1 When shooting I just use the hood so I don’t frequently take it off and on. I put a filter on the inside of the hood if there will be sand, debris blowing or ocean spray.

I, too, like screw in caps, I have had press on or snap on lens caps fall off when the lens is in my back pack

so I have gotten screw in caps for as many of my lenses as possible

of course, I usually take off the cap when I reach my destination when I reach the location I am taking photos

I found a used two piece set on eBay in Canada. Satisfied my OCD with a $23.00 purchase including shipping. End of story. Thanks for your inputs/help.

I used to use a 30.5mm UV filter screwed to the INSIDE of the hood. So elegant! However, these days I don't bother with UV filters on any of my lenses, after a bad experience with one I was using on the DA 55-300.

I agree. If I lost my 40mm Ltd. cap, this is what I would do.

I’ve lost and found my 40 Limited cap several times. As a consequence I have an extra cap and hood set.
