I have misplaced the screw-in part on the DA 40 that screws into the shade. Any ideas where I can find one? Is it called a lens cap? I have been inserting an ilford film canister lid for easy access, and so I wouldn't lose the original. Go figure!

are you looking for the item for the 40mm XS ?

I spent a long time looking for one

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/81-expired-listings/365645-wanted-expire...ml#post4274155

then UncleVanya suggested a simple solution:

get a 27mm screw in filter and permanently attach the commonly available press on cap making one " cap "

it works for me, when I don't want the cap, I just unscrew the filter and cap unit

(aslyfox):

This is an original(?) cap for the SMC 40mm Limitd. It's in two parts: the MH-RC 49mm hood and the screw in cap. Very classy (if you have one that is!).

there are 3 DA 40 mms

the " best in its class " XS

the 2 limiteds, SMC and HD

I have both the XS and SMC variant

the opening in the hood of the SMC and HD I believe is 30.5m:

The lens hood has a 30.5 mm filter thread allowing for smaller filters when the hood is mounted.

so the idea would work if you can find an appropriate size filter ??

good luck

Exactly....bought a 27mm promoter uv filter and it works well...

I think you want this:

Pentax Front Lens Cap for DA 40mm f/2.8 Lens - Black 31493

The original may be best; still available

Maybe it is Fuji, not Ilford; it's been so long!

I don't think that will fit the 40mm f2.8 XS...See photo below the ADORAMA cap is the 49mm cap for the HD version. that has the scale and aperture on it. the XS version is a strict 27mm cap. In my photo the lens has a promaster 27mm filter.

Make sure we know which version he has....

Yep. If it’s the XS lens it this cap:

amazon.com : Pentax O-LC27 27mm Front Lens Cap for -DA 40mm f/2.8 XS Lens : Camera Lens Caps : Camera & Photo?tag=pentaxforums-20&

Bought one of these for my son. OP specified DA 40. Hard to tell which he needed; both are available

Im not sure which one is being looked for. This seems to be the one for the XS lens.

This is the one for the DA (non-XS) lens (hood with dedicated 30.5mm cap):

I found screw cap non-convenient. I put in into the bag and in the field use plastic 30.5 cap. I do not remember which one exactly I bought but it something like this:
ProOPTIC 30.5mm Plastic Snap-on Lens Cap PROCLSO305
