I didn't want this thread to turn into updating firmware. I simply explained why I could not use the PLM.

One of my first lenses was the ProMaster 70-300. It wasn't too bad for the crazy low price I paid. From there, I went to the 18-135.

The 18-135 has gone on lots of hikes, seen several parades, and sat through multiple HS marching band competitions. Probably won't ever part with that one, and if it stops working, I would have to replace it for sure.

But I do love my K prime collection as well ( which are usually in my budget range ).

For landscapes on APS-C, top choice right now is the DA 16-85. If that's out of your budget, the DA 18-135 is the next best choice.

The lenses I have that are keepers are:

Tamron 10-24
Sigma Macro 105
Sigma 300
Tamron 500 Mirror

I have the Pentax 18-55, a couple of ProMasters that I'd want to replace.

I want to cover the lower end from the Tamron, and up to the Sigma 300. I don't know whether to go with a zoom(s), or primary lenses. I can't spend more than about $500 for first addition(s) right now. I know that's not a good budget, but I will have to proceed slowly to build my lineup.

If primaries, which ones? I will say I prefer zooms, but of course have never looked thru a limited primary. I'm definitely planning on the 21 ltd. Also been looking at the DA*18-135.

My main photography is wildlife, landscape.

I would say it's obvious you have a good handle with the 18-135 or the 21. I haven't got the 21 but it's on my lust list. In lieu of the 18-135 your could go 16-85 or 28-105, I have neither but they both seem well regarded. With your budget you are going to be able to get just one lens at this time, I would pick the zoom with the best IQ rating, or what fits your needs best, they don't need to be fast for landscapes, just good.

Carol: Well, you made it perfectly clear; no firmware update. That stops me from recommending the 55-300 PLM so its on to recommendation plan B. Check the HD (red ring) version of the 55-300. This is also a really good choice and you can get it new or used for a good price.
The DA 21 Limited is a great choice. I really like mine, a green ring version.

I don't own a modern 28-105 but have two of the legacy lenses.

The FA28-105 4-5.6 IF is light and sharp but is a bit weak on contrast.

The FA28-105 4-5.6 PowerZoom is better, IMHO, in every way other than weight. Focus is fast, contrast is better, colors are good. The PZ function is actually pretty fast on this lens.

If I were to sell one it would be the IF version. Yes, it's smaller and lighter but the IQ isn't as good as the PZ model and for me that's much more important.

However, honestly - I find the 18-135 more useful overall. Colors are as good (or better), AF is pleny fast for me, and contrast is good. Sharpness is great in the center and just as soft as the 28-105 IMHO in the corners but you have more range on each end.

The 28-105 is supposed to have better IQ, it's also larger and heavier, but obviously ready if you ever go full frame. I have had the 18-135 since July 2012, it's once of my most used lenses, one of the best lens purchases I have made, no regrets.

I am perfectly happy with the capability of my DA HD 55-300mm WR. If I want to go for top quality, and more aperture range especially, then it is the DA* 50-135mm and DA* 200mm f/2.8 lenses.

The DA 18-135mm is a fine, versatile choice, and even very good for landscape, especially at its shorter end, then especially at 24mm. I just got back home from out of town, where I went to shoot a HS wrestling tournament, and visit a friend who is a wrestling coach. They loved the photos I got with my DA 18-135mm- a perfect tool for this event! I also made use of my AF 540 FGZ flash in combo, mainly for fill and light balancing due to the gym's ceiling lights.

If budget is no problem... I think the DA 20-40 Limited and the DA*60-250 would cover the gap rather nicely

Docrwm Excellent information on the FA 28-105! I really appreciate this; as this really helps if I decide to go for a 28-105.
